Synopsis
This first volume of a major reassessment of the last five centuries of German history deals with that age of German history which had the widest effect on the rise of modern Western civilization. Against the background of medieval culture, the author shows the origins of Luther's religion and the growth of various Protestant churches, as well as the subsequent restoration of the Roman Catholic Church. The history of the religious movements of the Reformation and the Counter Reformation is closely co-ordinated with the great transformation simultaneously taking place in the social, economic, and intellectual institutions of Europe. Included are detailed discussions of the effects of the Black Death, the rise of the cities, Luther's social ethics, The Thirty Years' War, and the Peace of Westphalia in 1648., Deals with the age of German history which had an effect on the rise of modern Western civilization. Against the background of medieval culture, this work shows the origins of Luther's religion and the growth of various Protestant churches, as well as the subsequent restoration of the Roman Catholic Church.

  • Intense reading of the history of the Holy Roman Empire evolving to the Germany of Today

This is an intense historical book on facts of the German nation states which were in the hundreds to become one nation. If you wish to know how the multi nations of the Holy Roman Empire became unified and into the modern Germany that we know it to be, this is the book for you. It is not simple to read just one chapter since there is so much covered for the beginnings of the German nation. Maps are needed and they are wonderful from the Theodore Miller map collection of black and whites. Perfect for anyone to see the growth, merging of the many into the states of Bismarck's reign in the 19th century.
