There are two main types of electric washing lines:

• Electric washing airer: This is plugged into the mains, and the rails themselves heat up. There are several shapes and differing combinations in size and position of tiers.
• Covered airer: The other principle design requires a cover to be placed over the airer, and a unit projecting hot air upwards is placed underneath. The cover keeps the heat in and speeds up the drying process.

Alternatively, fixed mounted units can be attached to the wall or ceiling. These nifty gadgets expand to reveal multiple rails and then fold compactly away into their casing when not in use. Manufacturers’ guidelines should be checked for safe and compliant installation.

Unit instructions will advise on the different heat settings for types of clothing. For example, the drying time for silk will differ from that of cotton or denim items. Each unit will also state its laundry weight capacity.

As a dual purpose item, the hot air drying unit can also be used as a space heater when used independently of the rail and cover.
