The ACR PLBs are a great product that can surely save your life in an emergency far from normal communication options. But remember that the battery has to be replaced every five years at an ACR authorized service center and the unit itself won't be serviced after it is 12 years and 1 month past the manufacture date. So if you're buying a used unit, always check the manufacture month and year on the back label and see how long you've got until you need a new battery or until the unit will be pulled out of service (17 years). The new battery will run about $130.00 to $150.00 every five years. On the plus side, the ACR doesn't require any annual membership fees and it is linked to a broad system of very reliable satellites and first-responder notification networks. If you hunt or travel alone, it's one of the best investments you can make for yourself and your family's peace of mind. Read full review
