Gus Lobel è da decenni uno dei migliori scout del baseball, sempre in cerca di nuovi talenti sportivi. Anche se l'età avanza Gus si rifiuta di finire in "panchina" e di terminare così gli ultimi anni della sua brillante carriera. Purtroppo però non ha scelta. L'ufficio centrale degli Atlanta Braves inizia a mettere in discussione le sue capacità, specialmente in vista della selezione di un nuovo fenomeno del baseball. L'unica persona che potrebbe aiutarlo è l'unica alla quale Gus preferirebbe non doversi rivolgere: sua figlia Mickey, un avvocato di Atlanta, una giovane donna che grazie alla sua ambizione, sta per diventare socio dello studio legale in cui lavora.
