About this product

Product Information

John Rayburn thought all of his problems were the mundane ones of an Ohio farm boy in his last year in high school. Then his doppelganger appeared, tempted him with a device that let him travel across worlds, and stole his life from him. John soon finds himself caroming through universes, unable to return home--the device is broken. John settles in a new universe to unravel its secrets and fix it. Meanwhile, his doppelganger tries to exploit the commercial technology he's stolen from other Earths: the Rubik's Cube John's attempts to lie low in his new universe backfire when he inadvertently introduces pinball. It becomes a huge success. Both actions draw the notice of other, more dangerous travelers, who are exploiting worlds for ominous purposes. Fast-paced and exciting, this is SF adventure at its best from a rising star.

Praise forSingularity's Ring: "A distinctive vision of a post-singularity future…. Melko gives us an absorbing tour of a world where humanity isn't what it used to be." -Charles Stross "Bursts forth like a new universe exploding into being; a major book that happens to also be the debut novel of a stellar new talent." --Robert J. Sawyer, Hugo and Nebula Award winning author "Melko is clearly an up-and-comer, and this is a distinctive debut." -Kirkus Reviews, Praise for Singularity's Ring : "A distinctive vision of a post-singularity future…. Shipping was quick, item was new and packaged very carefully. I cannot leave less than positive feedback but the size was not accurately depicted with just one photo showing length and they were much smaller than expected. I would have returned them but return shipping was too expensive.

  • An interesting story and concept

in his second novel (Singularity's Ring (2008)) Paul Melko shows surprising insight with a new approach to an old idea. The idea of traveling between universes is not a new idea but few have been able to take the idea and write a good story around it. In this story, John Rayburn suddenly meets himself, is tricked into using a device that sends him to another universe that he cannot get back from. From there John sets out on a voyage to discover a way back home and a way to get his life back. During the voyage he meets new people, uses his knowledge of his own life to get ahead, and discovers that his own universe may not be what he is searching for after all. Reviews for this novel have been mixed, some give it a good rating for its imagination and some say it is very simplistic. ...
