First-hand Account
Hans Christian Heg is not a well known figure outside of the Norwegian American community. However, because of his command of the English language and his descriptive writing style, he is often quoted and referenced in Civil War liturature. This book contains a collection of letters to his wife and chidren dating from January 16, 1862 to September 18,1863. Colonel Heg was mortally wounded on the second day of the Battle of Chickamauga and died on September 20,1863. Colonel Heg recruited, organized and commanded the first and only all Scandinavian Regiment in the Civil War, the 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His letters provide first hand accounts of the daily activities of this unit, the battles they fought, and the triumphs and tragedies of the times. I bought this book ... They held my interest far better than most history books This book is a must for anyone interested in Civil War history and the early Wisconsin Norwegian immigrant community.
