Clint Eastwood plays an alcoholic, dim-witted cop, Ben Shockley, who has to escort an irate prostitute, Gus Mally (Sondra Locke), from Las Vegas to Phoenix so she can testify in a mob trial. Gus immediately warns Ben of the danger that they're in, but he doesn't believe her. He eventually figures out that his superiors want Gus dead and chose him for the job because they thought he'd fail. The two spend most of the film eluding the trigger-happy cops. The banter between Ben and Gus, who initially despise each other, is just as brutal and entertaining as the action set pieces. And when the two finally warm to each other, it's surprisingly effective. Eastwood and Locke made many films together, but THE GAUNTLET features what may be their strongest collaboration. Literal-minded critics may malign the film for its over-the-top explosive action, but it's clear that Eastwood was aware of how outrageous and preposterous the action in the film is. As Jan De Bont would later do with another wildly entertaining and implausible film involving a bus, SPEED, Eastwood here has stripped down the action movie to its bare essence. THE GAUNTLET is a fun ride.

The Gauntlet (VHS, 1990)
This is one of those old Clint Eastwood movies that deserves to be watched twice. The first time that you see it, you just might be left with the question: "Was this movie as ridiculous as it seemed?" - Actually, the second time that you see it, you realize that it just may be, but you will enjoy the action much more, and probably enjoy it. I did! Clint Eastwood plays a not too smart Phoenix cop who has made more enemies than Hitler in a Jewish ghetto. He is an alcoholic, and is disrespectful to his boss and can't stand the other officers who are practically all either just plain stupid, or on the take from the mob, or both. He is picked for a special assignment to escort a prostitute from Vegas to Phoenix to testify against the Mafia boss. Gus Mally (Sondra Locke), tries to warn him that ... Of course, Ben don't believe her. The relationship between Ben and Gus is full of fireworks; they hate each other! Pretty soon, killers start coming out of the shadows everywhere. Gus' house gets shot up, the transport vehicle gets bombed, and there is an open pursuit across the open country. An encounter with a bunch of bikers winds up with Ben and Gus on a "borrowed" chopper with cops chasing them. Eventually, Ben and Gus warm up to each other. They have to ditch the chopper because the cops and the crooked Police Commissioner, Blakelock, are looking for them in a helicopter. The pair are now on a train where they run into the bikers whose bike they took. They beat the hell out of Ben and attempt to rape Gus, but Ben gets the better of them and throws both the bikers and their skanky girlfriends off the train. An old friend of Shockley's, Maynard Josephson, warns them that the police have set up a gauntlet entering town to kill them. Ben hijacks a bus and the two enter town and are shot at until the bus can't move. When Ben and Gus exit the bus, Ben is shot by Blakeloch, who is in turn shot dead by Gus. With too many eyes watching, Ben and Gus walk away safely from the gauntlet of cops.

Clint plays a cop with a drinking problem who has to bring a hooker, played by Sandra Locke, to City Hall to testify against mobsters and crooked cops. Clint is tough and gritty. Locke is very street-wise. Her response to the local yokel cop who just wants to hear her talk dirty is graphic and shocking. I loved it! The armored bus heading towards city hall with guns blazing away at it is just too much. I love the concept, and the casting. Clint Eastwood is every bit a bad-ass. The Gauntlet VHS 1990
Always enjoy a good Clint Eastwood movie. This is definitely one of them. I bought it because I like the older movies. Great story line from start to finish. Being more old fashioned, I prefer the VHS over the CDs. Just nice to know they are still out there.
