50 years after K Clark, Schama explores positive cross-cultural influences, and Beard & Olusoga look at the cultural damage of European expansion.
Civilisations is an interesting, well-funded BBC project, with the aim of exploring the history of the world's main cultures, mostly through their art. The title is taken as an update of the highly influential BBC serial Civilisation, made by art historian Kenneth Clark in 1969, in the first days of colour tv. The writers and presenters of Civilisations are Simon Schama, Mary Beard, and David Olusoga, who are all professors of history or classics, and already known for their film-making. The technical side of the project is superb, in keeping with 50 years of landmark BBC serials. After the showcase introduction by Schama, each of the remaining 8 programmes select a particular theme, and run with it across time and across different cultures. In possibly the best episode, Schama makes a ... Civilisations is an interesting, well-funded BBC project, with the aim of exploring the history of the world's main cultures, mostly through their art. The title is taken as an update of the highly influential BBC serial Civilisation, made by art historian Kenneth Clark in 1969, in the first days of colour tv. The writers and presenters of Civilisations are Simon Schama, Mary Beard, and David Olusoga, who are all professors of history or classics, and already known for their film-making. The technical side of the project is superb, in keeping with 50 years of landmark BBC serials. After the showcase introduction by Schama, each of the remaining 8 programmes select a particular theme, and run with it across time and across different cultures. In possibly the best episode, Schama makes a compelling case for a multicultural Renaissance, at least in architecture, spurred on by competition between artists and sovereigns in Rome, Istanbul, and Delhi. In the programme on stone architecture, he echoes a key episode of Bronowski's Ascent of Man, though Schama uses different examples and makes more artistic points. Another episode, on the representation of light in art, takes in stained glass, Japanese C18th & C19th popular block-print art and how this influenced the French Impressionists. Finally, Schama brings out the influence of several world cultures in the stained glass of a modern Matisse chapel. Schama's choice of locations is partly influenced by past art history programmes. If Clark spent more time in Rome & Florence, then Schama chooses his examples from Venice. He also respects an excellent recent Channel 4 programme on India's religious imagary by choosing different examples. Overall, Schama's programmes are more about comparison, and the positive influences civilisations have had upon each other. Beard & Olusoga take a different approach, emphasising contrast and conflict between civilisations, and the negative influence on other cultures of European expansion, from 1500 onward. Beard takes issue with the primacy of the Greek aesthetic in the way Europeans view the art of other cultures. In doing so, she directly confronts K Clark's serial, returning to some of his examples, in Syon House & Ravenna, with a different perspective. However, the presentation of this episode is rather oversimplified, and in losing academic rigour, some arguments appeal more to emotion than to reason. In another episode, on the `eye of faith', she takes on the controversial topic of whether religious imagery should be considered art, exploring the lines between the divine and the secular, and between iconography to focus prayer and the false transference of idolatory. Although it would be difficult to take issue with the written script in this episode, a sceptic tone of voice is reserved for Christian rites alone. Whilst Beard addresses on the intellectual armament of culture clashes, Olusoga concentrates on the physical consequences of European domination. These include the destruction of native American cultures in the 1500s, the influence of waves of trading and military expeditions from Europe to West Africa, the looting of art, and the rewriting of history to wipe away multicultural moments, such as early C17th Lisbon. Although the programmes are passionate and compelling, there is sometimes a hint that some homework has been skipped. If one is looking for early American influences in Spain, then Trujillo is an important missed opportunity, and more convincing than the claim that one can trace the representation of stigmatic marks to the Aztecs. Beard & Olusoga have taken on a difficult challenge, to discuss the conflict of civilisations and the contrast of cultures, within the intrinsically peaceful context of art history, whilst aiming to keep their audience entertained. Schama has the far more comfortable remit. Despite his lack of background as an art historian, Schama offers us valuable insights on cross-cultural pollination and evolution, and a wider audience will appreciate his programmes as a significant contribution to the public understanding of art. However, although each programme stands coherently on its own, there is no unifying vision or thread to follow through all 9 episode. Thus, it is difficult to see this being watched in 50 years time, in the same way as K Clark's Civilisation.
