About this product

Product Information

Assembled from vintage issues of Peterson's Magazine, a popular nineteenth-century "ladies" periodical that premiered in 1842, here is an authentic gallery of Civil War-era clothing patterns for women, children, and men. The author of many books on historic fashion, Seleshanko has compiled this new, original volume of wonderfully usable antique garment designs to delight costume designers, historians, Civil War reconstructionists, and antiques collectors alike During the 1860s, the Civil War left Americans with shortages of all kinds -- including clothing resources. Peterson's pattern diagrams were of enormous help to women who no longer had the opportunity to purchase their clothing abroad or visit their local dressmaker. This one-of-a-kind collection showcases sixty historically accurate nineteenth-century garment designs. Included are a Chemise, the Madeline Wrapper, and a Polonaise Dinner Dress for ladies...a Knickerbocker Suit and Loose Jacket and Waistcoat for boys...and a Tunic and Cape and Basquine Dress for girls...and, for men, a handsome Smoking Cap. 60 patterns. Over 300 diagrams and illustrations.

The seller was wonderful. I had the wrong address on my account and she was kind enough to make sure that my pattern was delivered to my correct address. Not only that but she carefully wrapped the pattern in a beautiful butterfly envelope that made me smile upon being delivered. She also took the care to wrap the pattern in a file folder first, giving it extra protection. I have nothing but nice things to say about this seller! I would definitely order from her again and recommend her!

  • 60 Civil War-era Fashion Patterns

Fashions from Petersons magazine ranging from 1860-1869,mostly women's with a few for little boys and young ladies. Patterns are included although measurements are not clear. One seam will give you the length to enlarge while the next gives no clue. This is still a very good resource for proper style reaching into the years following the US Civil War. Had hoped for more 1860-1865. these patterns are about half from post Civil War which is not workable for Civil War reenactors.

  • Could be better

Patterns taken from women's magazine of period. Most patterns are outlines only without measurement or even joining points, or even a grid pattern laid on to aid enlargement. Would be better if more detail provided. Book is a historical source of patterns, not a how to sew it book. Assumes you can do basic fitter and adjust patterns to size. Allowing that and one drawing view of each garment it was fine.

  • This was a fun book depicting detailed Civil War Era Fashions.

I ordered this book because I sew Civil War Era fashions for the two new American Girl Dolls. Although the outfits in this book are very detailed and ornate, they did give me some ideas that can be simplified and used for the dolls. The book met my expectations and I would buy it again.

  • 60 Civil War Era Fashion Patterns

Love the book - i wanted more details on creating civil war fashions (am a reenactor) each item has the original description of the item as well as the line drawing pattern for it. obviously one has to scale the patterns to use them but that was understood in the original magazines. i really like the variety of patterns offered in the book. this will be a very useful book for me for ideas

  • Here is a complete wardrobe in one book.

This is an amazing book complete with patterns that are quite easy to draft with a French curve. A fundamental knowledge of dressmaking is helpful as directions for the construction of the garments is not included. The fashion plates are worth the price of the book!
