Sorry, it's not better than expected. It's what I expected. This is the third Garmin GPS Map76S that I have purchased, and so I knew what I wanted. I was pleased to find that it appears to have been looked after. They are no longer available as a new unit.

Just glad to get one of these older Garmin units that are good shape and functional. I think these are superior to the 78. Thank you!

A great, no-frills, capable unit, with compass and barometric altimeter built in. It floats unharmed if you drop it in a creek. I'll generally use it (and a much used, trouble free, identical unit) for mapping private lands and leases. The "push button" interface is much more convenient and consistent for navigating the menus under field condition. All the menus are easily displayed and accessed, making changes and updates to waypoints, tracks, and routes a snap. This receiver is well supported by tried and true software utilities, including Garmin's MapSource, using a serial interface. This unit communicates flawlessly with third party mapping software, so the often quirky USB interface touted on newer units isn't even missed. It also works just fine with a low cost USB-to-serial converter for those computers with USB only. The back lit gray scale screen is very readable, even at night or in bright sunlight. I seriously considered the new, GPSMAP 78S, but its USB interface and abbreviated MapSource functionality were a real turnoff. The GPSMAP 78S's 3 axis compass would have been nice.Read full review
Get caught in fog just once and you'll wish you had one of these things on board. Very easy to set weigh points and routes. It's way point and route capabilities will get you to your destination with only a 6 ft margin of error. Excellent tide data as well.

I bought this for my husband, a long time paraglider pilot. This model is the gps standard for several competitive paragliding leagues . Everything was as he wanted until he saw the color display on another pilot's 76cs. We ended up finding a 76csx here on eBay a few weeks later. That model has a mini-usb port in addition to the antique serial interface (76s and 76cs are serial only). As the technical support crew, I recommend the mini-usb over serial (faster and no adapter is needed).
It is one of the better models produced by Garmin for marine use. They are no longer being made and have been replaced by the 78xxx model. Its a matter of personal preference but I prefer the old 76 and 76S model, the new 78 model is less user friendly and has a bunch of unnecessary bells and whistles. The 76 model comes with either land based or marine based map, make sure you find out which it has before you buy as it can have only one or the other. In order to change it you will need additional software and it can't be bought from Garmin, you will have to get it from the seller- if they have it.
This item is very easy to use, very accurate, and very versatile. The screen is easy to read in both daylight and very low light. This is a great gps for the money. Highly recomended.
This is one of the few GPS that runs on AA batteries if all fails. Its rugged and never failed me on 12000 sailing miles. However initializing is slow if not used for some time.

One of the most reliable gps in the market. This is probably the work horse of Garmin. Hope they keep updates for them. I had one of these and I use it out at sea almost every day for the last 8 years, never had a problem. This unit will work as a back up. Highly recommended.
Great unit. Black & white screen is easier to read than color. Garmin stripped out some functionality in the newer 78 units making me auction it and find a refurbished 76. Serial port interface makes it harder to interface with map data.
