The one-room schoolhouse, where one teacher instructs several grades at once, is generally regarded a quaint thing of the past and a symbol of obsolete and ineffective teaching methods. However, the documentary To Be and to Have offers an in-depth look at a small school in rural France where one remarkable man has been doing the job of a small teaching staff for 20 years, and has taught several generations of bright and capable children along the way. Georges Lopez is an educator at a small school in France's Auvergne region, where between December 2000 and June 2001 he taught 12 students between the ages of four and ten. Employing a curriculum that embraces both academics and practical skills, Lopez and his school represent a surprising mix of the old and the new, where computer technology and old-fashioned memorization of the multiplication tables sit side by side. To Be and to Have captured Georges Lopez near the end of his career in education -- shortly after the film was completed, he retired after 35 years as a teacher.

    A must see...

    One of the most poignant and memorable documentaries ever made. I watched this on the big screen when it came out and wanted to share it with my husband and Daughter, hence the dvd purchase.

    ETRE ET AVOIR (TO BE AND TO HAVE)

    This is a fabulous film throughout. Moving and funny, it depicts life in a French provincial school exactly as it happens.....an idyllic education from a superb educator.... a school life every child deserves. Beautiful cinematography and easy to read subtitles, Etre et Avoir is definitely worth watching whether you speak French or not. One of my favourite films of all time and enjoyed equally by my children.... A must-see movie!!!! 5/5!!!

    BUY IT !!!

    This is excellent film, about a small, one classroom French village primary school, run by a dedicated teacher. Action takes you from the early junior years, right to the time for the senior students to leave and enter the secondary school. Even though classified as a documentary, it is handled without any comments from a narrator, all talking being done by the dialogue between the teacher and pupils, the action being laid out for the viewer to decide for him/herself about what is going on. A very emotional, beautifully handled film, which you will love, guaranteed!

    Watch this film, it will change how you think about education.

    An astonishing insight into the life of a tiny French school, intrusive in some ways, but beautiful and touching. Inspirational viewing for anyone with an interest in education. This is not a story, more an observation of real life.
