The Camera Lucida
I must admit to being pretty impressed with this device. I wasn’t expecting too much as is uses a mirror and not prisms as the Victorian models did. If used correctly the image required (portrait, still life or landscape) may be seen with the eye as if projected onto the drawing pad or canvas. It does take a little skill which is akin to drawing images from a microscope, but once mastered, it is great for getting all of the fine details in exactly the right places in your artwork. Having said all that, I don’t get the chance to use it much (just like the original Victorian one). It is another tool available for the artist, which is there if it is required.
