Solid Performing Glass - Really about 4.5
To preface, I wanted/needed a 2.8 constant aperture zoom lens that I could use in both Auto and Manual modes with my D5100, as well as my D90. For the Auto feature to work with the D5100, that requires a lens with a motor. For me this Sigma 50-150 was a bit of a compromise lens, in two ways. First, I did not want to get/have both a 28-70 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8 (due to the cost of buying both, as well as having to change out a lens for some captures), so I found and settled on this 50-150 2.8 that covered almost all of the focal range I need in my work and play. The other point is tied in to the first, but in Nikon's line it would have been a 17-55 2.8 and 70-200 2.8, which is way out of my price range. I feel I made a pretty good choice. The color tone is a bit different, slightly warmer I would say, than a Nikon lens. To me that is not a big deal. The lens offers a fast and smooth zoom that is relatively quiet. Not as silent as a Nikon SWM (Silent Wave Motor) motor but the Sigma HSM (HyperSonic Motor) does not bother me in the least. The images produced have been sharp shooting at f/2.8 pretty much across the focal range. There might be a bit less sharpness near the 150 mark, but it seems to be pretty insignificant as I cannot tell any real difference looking at images with the naked eye. The lens performs exceedingly well in low light areas allowing no-flash captures most of the time. If and when a flash has been required I was surprised when I did not see any vignetting when using the built-in flash. That said, I generally attach and use my bounce flash when needed. The lens produces a good bokeh (background blur). It is not quite as good as I get with the Nikon lenses I own and have owned. Again this is a compromise lens, but the results have been more than acceptable. The build quality is good. It feels pretty solid (and weighs a whole lot less than a 70-200). Sigma’s EX (Excellence) finish is durable and feels good to the touch. This is a DC lens, designed so that the image circle matches the smaller size of the image sensor, the same as a Nikon DX format, i.e., it is not a full frame lens. As a note, this is the “II” version of the lens. While I have not personally compared the difference between this lens and its predecessor, this updated model has been optimized with a better optical design that evidently provides more optimum lens performance, including better correction for flare and ghosting. There is also available the much newer OS (Optical Stabilization) version of this 50-150 2.8 lens (the Sigma counter to Nikon’s VR – Vibration Reduction feature). I am pretty good shooting hand-held which is why I opted for this lens and not the OS model. Keep in mind this is not a wide-angle lens and cannot be viewed as such. If you need both wide angle and longer range zoom at 2.8 for your work or pleasure shooting you will definitely need to get two pieces of glass. Again, I don’t really need that, so this Sigma 50-150 fits the bill quite nicely. I would definitely recommend this lens to any Nikonian needing a solid performing constant 2.8 zoom lens with the caveats mentioned in my review.

Great bargin lens!
Bought lens used from KEH. They listed the condition as ugly(heavily worn). The glass was flawless and after a light exterior cleaning it hardly looked used. Thought I would take a chance at only $313. This lens does exactly what I need, shoot indoors in low light without flash. The images are incredibly sharp for such a small lens. Comparatively small. It's about the same size as my 55-300 vr lens. Looked at various 70-200 2.8 lenses but all were to big and heavy for travel. Shooting a crop sensor D7200 this lens gives me a full frame equivalent of 75-210, quite sufficient for me. Wish it had OS but not having it is the reason for the size, Sigmas new 50-150 OS is the same size as their 70-200 2.8.
