Sigma 5-150 F2.8 HSM: Small is beautiful!
I bought this lens in an auction here on Ebay because I was looking for an alternative to my Nikon 80-200 F2.8, for several reasons. And I'm very happy with my purchase. I'm not a pixel peeper, nor did I run any tests. My review is based solely on the pictures I've taken in normal usage. First of all,the 2.8 constant aperture is equivalent to my Nikon. The zoom range, although different, is still comparable and similar enough. But the Sigma is better in two ways: portability and focusing speed. Its a small, compact and light lens, especially compared to my push pull 80-200 Nikon. One of the main reasons I wanted an alternative to that Nikon lens, is that I used it very little, because of its size and weight. I found myself unwilling, much more often than not, to take it with me because it ... I found myself unwilling, much more often than not, to take it with me because it was cumbersome and heavy, and that meant I was taking a lot less pictures than I would have liked to. And taking pictures is the reason I have cameras and glass. Focus is handled by Sigmas's HSM system, and it is very fast. Granted, the model of my Nikon 80-200 F2.8 is not the fastest of the 80-200 family (later makes, from what I've read, are much faster), but this Sigma beats my Nikon in focusing speed and accuracy by such a margin, that I was actually very surprised. Because of the weight advantage, its not built like the Nikon, but it still has a solid feel to it, not a plasticky cheap feel. On the downside, it does not have a focus range limiter, like the Nikon. The image quality is very good (disclaimer in first paragraph): it seems very sharp, nice detail and color rendition, minimal distortion and I haven't been bothered by distortion or color fringing. I don't have many pictures to compare it to the Nikon 80-200, since I have so few pictures taken with my D200 and the Nikon 80-200, that I have no real means of comparison (the 80-200 was used more often than some years ago, with film cameras, and of late has acquired fungus, which also deteriorated IQ and prevented a direct shoot out). The only thing I don't like as much has to do with the zoom ring being placed closest to the camera body. It makes it difficult to hand hold and zoom in or out at the same time. And if you want to use the manual focus ring you HAVE to take out the reversed hood, which can make you miss shots in hurry up situations, if you want to use MF. I don't miss the extra 50mm of the Nikon, but I am looking to buy something with longer focal lengths, as long as it is light an small enough to take with me. Size matters (on film I shot a lot on a Nikon FM2a, and used MF Nikor glass, which is usually small and light), so the portability of this lens was a big reason for wanting it. Now that I have it, its just one more reason to keep it and use often my Sigma 50-150. I'm very satisfied with the lens. If you're looking for 2.8 aperture lens, with a good zoom range (on DX cameras its a 75-225), very good IQ, fast focusing and small and light, you'll be very happy with this lens.

A lovely lightweight lens
This lens has a really useful zoom range on a crop sensor camera. It is a bright f2.8 lens with a fabulous bokeh. It is very lightweight compared to the 70-200mm lenses it competes with. My example was spoiled by it "front focussing" at 135mm and up (when auto-focussed on the eyes it was the tip of the nose that was in focus at f2.8). It was very good over the rest of the range albeit with a tendancy to "hunt" if contrast/light was low. Sigma were prepared to update the lens firmware and recalibrate it if returned through the stockist I purchased from. As this is a discontinued lens they were not however prepared to guarantee that they could effect a repair if needed, nor quote a time frame. Because of this I ended up returning my example, but if this is not an issue, then, I think you ... This lens has a really useful zoom range on a crop sensor camera. Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM II For Nikon
I'd been looking to buy this lens, for some time, to replace two older lenses with just one of a higher quality. I'm certainly not sorry that I bought this; it's everything I was hoping for. The quality of images taken so far (one studio shoot and once outdoors in the snow)is excellent.. and the focusing quick and very quiet. Would definitely recommend
