I have always made it a policy of mine not to buy recordings made by artists who have reached the age when their voices "don't sound like they used to".However, I decided to make an exception in this case as Johnny Cash is by far my favorite artist.I must say that the compilation sounds, on average, better than I expected although there are a few "croaky" songs that really should have been omitted. I am very pleased that I made the decision to buy this package and I think it is a wonderful memoir of a truly great artist. This said, I would say it is definitely for fans only!
An excellent must have box set for any diehard fan of Johnny Cash. Along with great tracks you get a very interesting booklet and from the music a real sense of how Johnny Cash was feeling during the recordings. The tracks run the whole range of the American Recordings Series and have some really special tracks within. My favourites would be Devils Right Hand, the Steve Earle track (No.12 on the Trouble in Mind cd) and also Gentle On My Mind duet with Glen Campbell (No.12 on the Redemption Songs cd). But really it is a disservice to single out any one (or two) track(s). The cold hard truth is that this is a masterpiece from start to finish and beautifully captures the art and true love of a legend who although in his twilight years still manages to convey his professionalism, dedication passion and great great skill as a songwriter and musician. There is nothing to dislike about this box set, if you see it anywhere buy it.Read full review

This is an amazing addition to the Johnny Cash American recordings. A five disc set with a great book attached. Had to have it and paid a premium price for it. Well worth adding to your collection.

I can't imagine being without this. When I bought it, I thought maybe some of the material would be a little weaker than the four American sets, but it's not. There are enough surprises, pleasures and revelations on this set to classify as an essential set. For the Cash fan who was converted by the American releases, this is just as essential as those that have been following him all along. Some of his 60's albums have some production concepts that make them a little bit weaker, but none of that is on the American releases. It's just shocking that before Rick Rubin signed Johnny, he was without(and without expectation) of being signed by a major label. How ironic that the best music he made since his 50's and early 60's sides came at the very end. I can't recommend this material enough.Read full review
