Match this lens with a medium to high-end Canon DSLR and you have yourself a world class image machine second to none.

Is it as good as the reviews?
You can read all the technical jargon, all the reviews by esteemed publications, but at the end of the day you want to know if its as good as they say it is. In my opinion as a keen amateur photographer, I'd say yes it is, and actually a bit better. I use it as a "bird in flight" lens with a 1.4 converter and its better than my 400/f5.6L. I use it for dragonflies and butterflies for the fabulous sharpness, detail and bokeh. The IS system is brilliant and although it is a heavy piece of glass I can hand hold it and get quite acceptable image sharpness even at 1/100th sec although most of the time I hand hold it is for birds in flight where shutter speeds are considerably faster. Most of the time I use it on a monopod where again the IS makes a big difference. I've been very careful with ... Simply superb
I have used other exotic long lenses like the Nikkor 500mm f4 and Nikkor 300mm f2.8 but the Canon is definitely sharper particularly wide open. The Nikkors with TCs needed to be stopped down for best IQ whereas the Canon does not. The focus speed is fast even with a 2x iii attached. And finally the IS works very well. An outstanding lens that is portable and hand holdable.
