Additional Information
TRAINSPOTTING director Danny Boyle returns to edgy form and reinvents the science-fiction/horror genre with this apocalyptic tale of viral infection and Darwinian survival. A fatal virus is unleashed on the British public following the liberation of infected chimps from a research laboratory by animal rights activists. The virus can be transmitted in one drop of blood and manifests itself within seconds, infecting its victims with a zombie-like state of murderous rage. Within 28 days the country's population is devastated, and the streets of London and Manchester are apocalyptically deserted save for a handful of healthy survivors who attempt to salvage what is left of civilization. Led by a bike messenger called Jim (Cillian Murphy), the survivors must contend with not only the hordes of plague-carrying zombies, but also with each other, as they manouevre toward a supposedly better future. Shooting on digital video and making excellent use of the bleak English landscapes, Boyle crafts a tale of societal and spiritual devastation reminiscent of horror classics like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and SHIVERS.

  • Another milestone for British Cinema C/O Danny Boyle

Good old Danny Boyle! While social realism certainly has its place in cinema we Brits have a habit of producing films with a tad too much modesty about them. Would it really hurt to incorporate some of the boisterous energy of our American counterparts into the gritty fabric of our cinematic output? Mr Boyle doesn't seem to think so, and as anyone who has seen 28 Days later will attest it combines the kineticism and energy of a Hollywood blockbuster while still retaining a very British sensibility. While ostensibly a horror film and a zombie flick 28 Days Later has more in its agenda than pointless scares and superficial action. Beneath the pulse pounding adrenaline fueled action and fright fest there are some salient observations about human nature and the dichotomy between human beings ...

  • 28 Days Later

Brilliantly executed, filmed and acted, Danny Boyles low budget British set horror is amazingly great and will have you on the edge of your seat from time to time, while shocking you to the core at others. Set in the aftermath of the outbreak of a deadly virus that has taken over most of the population, a small band of survivors try and find salvation, only to discover that the one thing more deadly than the infected is the survivors themselves. Even with a somewhat unknown cast (former Dr. Who Christopher Eccleston was is about the only recognisable face) the acting is fantastic, especially from the four lead actors/actresses Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Megan Burns and Brendan Gleeson, with Eccleston providing his usual brilliant performance. Coupled with this is some brilliant ...
