Set in 1988, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS opens on the first day of practice for the Odessa Permian Panthers. When Boobie goes down on opening day with a career threatening knee injury, the season appears to be over. But Gaines won't give up, and neither will the rest of his feisty players. Billy Bob Thornton delivers another outstanding performance in Berg's impassioned drama, as do the film's young actors (most notably Luke, Black, and Hedlund). Tobias Schliessler's fuel-injected photography and Explosion in the Sky's electrifying score make FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS an even more spectacular movie-going experience.

Good, could have been great...
I've come to this film after having seen the TV series, then reading the original book and finally watching the film. As entertainment, it's fine, but having read the book, I think this might have been better suited to being more of a documentary. There are definite nods to details from the book, but the Hollywood wand has removed many of the unpleasant aspects of the story, so several major themes are left out of the film. The extras on the DVD restore some depth and background back into the film, and one of the deleted scenes, which was a huge part of the book, really should have made the main movie. The casting was very good, with a few of the cast looking spookily like their real-life counterparts - some (at least two) of the cast are also in the TV series. If I sound down on the ... The players struggle to achieve a good college place by standing out on the football field. There's a big game every Friday played under floodlights (hence the title). How well they play determines whether or not they can break free of small town life and make it big in the outside world. In Texas, High School football is everything...it is as important as football is to Liverpool supporters in the UK! This film is a bit dated but is still a good watch. One of the best sporting movies out there
In a town where football is everything, a high school football team must carry the weight of expectation and hope on their shoulders. This film is truly brilliant, i watched it online one time and the quality was pretty bad but it was that good in bad quality that i had to buy it, for less than £5 this film is a must!!! anyone who likes sports will love this, but even if you dont the journey the players go through will keep you entertained throughout. i give this 10/10 because i love it, but from a non biased view i would say it has to be a 9/10, this is easily one of the best or IMO the best sports film there is out there, and for less the £5 what are you waiting for?In a town where football is everything, a high school football team must carry the weight of expectation and hope on their shoulders. Friday night light
Whilst looking for the next season of the US TV drama, I happened across this, a great film version. it's all very compulsive for competitive pesron. It focuses on the characters and relationships against a backdrop of American High School Football. A good watch.
