Writer-director Richard Kelly's bold debut film is a social satire, a dark comedy, a science fiction time-travelling fantasy, and a suburban nightmare about an extremely intelligent, depressive, self-destructive, narcoleptic, gun-toting, sex-crazed, teenaged arsonist: Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal). DONNIE DARKO is not your typical teen comedy. But, like GHOST WORLD and RUSHMORE, it uses the trappings of the teen comedy as the entry point for a subversive and trenchant (and also wonderfully entertaining) look at American life. The difference between those films and DONNIE DARKO is that Donnie is an unlikely hero who just might save the world. It's October 1988, in the Virginia suburb of Middlesex. When Frank, a grotesque giant bunny (possibly imaginary), leads Donnie out of his house minutes before a plane smashes through his roof, he not only saves Donnie's life but also warns Donnie that the world is about to end. Over the next few weeks, Donnie falls in love with Gretchen (Jena Malone) and tries to figure out what his life means. Kelly's film perfectly captures the unease that is quietly scratching under the surface of suburban late 1980s life. Gyllenhaal leads an exceptional cast, bringing Kelly's twisted but humane vision to life. An exceptional performance is given by Mary McDonnell (PASSION FISH) as Donnie's mother.

One in a million.
Donnie Darko is the first of its kind and i can honestly say that i have never seen another film like it. Its deep atmosphere while being humourous is wonderful, and the issues raised are so profound and utterly bewildering that it leaves you genuinley deep in thought. i adore the narrative of this film, as it mixes the out of the ordinary with regular conversations which would never usually be put into a film, but give it one hell of an edge. You feel for donnie darko, you understand him. You have no idea what its like to go through what he is, but in a way you want to. Apart from his link with "frank" and the strange loopholes in time, he is just another troubled teen that speaks his mind. However, his opinions are the ones we all think, but never say, making you love him so much ... His relationship with his girlfriend isnt romanticized, in fact it is played down, but it seems the most real and loving out of any relationship i have seen in the media. My favourite scene in the film is the Love or Fear discussion, where donnie speaks his mind into the microphone for the rest of the school to hear, its hilarious, blunt, and reflects the way most teens think. all in all, one of the most heart warming, tear jerking, thought inspiring films i have ever watched. 10 out of 10, A*'s all round.

Strange eerie film that makes u feel warm inside.
This is a film with a great soundtrack with of course 'mad world', about a boy who's a little odd, he has strange visions but has the chance to use a worm hole and take the clock back, very unusual, love it, bit dreamy. The second one was rubbish though, no comparison.
