About this product

Product Information

Gwyneth Paltrow, who won an Oscar for her performance in director John Madden's SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, teams up again with Madden in PROOF, a poignant drama based on David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Paltrow lights up the screen as Catherine, a young woman who has given up a seemingly bright future in order to take care of her ailing father, Robert (Anthony Hopkins), a formerly brilliant mathematician who went crazy. After he dies, Catherine's closed-off world is invaded by Hal (Jake Gyllenhaal), a young mathematician who worshipped Robert, and Claire (Hope Davis), her successful sister who fears that Catherine is too much like their father a talented, supremely intelligent person with severe mental problems. During the last years of his life, Robert filled 103 notebooks with his writings, but one of them, written during a brief period of lucidity, could turn the math world on its head, while also threatening Catherine's already wavering sanity. Auburn co-wrote the screenplay with Rebecca Miller (PERSONAL VELOCITY, THE BALLAD OF JACK AND ROSE), taking it off the stage, setting it in and around Chicago, and breathing new life into the story, along with Stephen Warbeck's compelling score and plenty of outstanding acting, particularly by the glowing Paltrow and the earnest Gyllenhaal.

Reviews
Movieline's Hollywood Life - The story is enormously affecting, and director John Madden guides the four stars to matchless performances, USA Today - PROOF proves undeniably that the intimacy of a stage play can be re-created powerfully on screen... This is a moving portrait of an intense bond between a father and daughter, an eloquent and resonant story about the ties that bind, Entertainment Weekly - PROOF works because it adds layers of pathos and suspense to its square roots

  • Proof (DVD)

It was at director John Madden's insistence that Gwyneth Paltrow trod the boards for David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize-snagging stage original of Proof. And though critics were eager to shred her to the bone, old Gwynnie came good. It's the same story on screen where, as a daughter wracked with grief at the death of her father (Anthony Hopkins' schizophrenic maths prof) and fearful of having inherited both his genius and condition, Paltrow excels. Yet despite the conviction of its lead, whose wraithlike fragility perfectly befits the brittle Catherine, Proof loses something in the transfer. The flashbacks used for Hopkins (all King Lear bluster and dimly flickering lucidity) feel overly functional, Jake Gyllenhaal's love interest is a drippy geek and the gallows humour evaporates amidst the ...

  • OK film, OK acting, but if you like Jake Gylls then buy it!

The film Proof is based on a stage play, and does to some extent come across like that. The acting is OK, but Gwyneth Paltrow is a little OTT, and her shouting and harsh whining may get on your nerves, which will be soothed immensely by cheerful and sensitive Jake Gyllenhaal. Anthony Hopkins is predictably good. Interesting film, which would be best watched twice, as the story is a little confusing and unclear due to flashbacks etc.

  • Proof DVD

I found this movie really quite difficult to watch. It is a great movie but it's very dark, and to me, it just lacked something but not sure what. The actors are superb, Anthony Hopkins plays a brillian paranoid schizophrenic mathematician and Gwyneth Paltrow plays his daughter. it's certainly not a feel-good film...

  • yummy.

JAKE GYLLENHAAL. Need I say more? ;) Seriously though, I haven't seen this film, but I've seen a lot of clips from it and it looks great. For those who like a bit of romance and mild humour mixed into a cocktail of drama... this is for you.
