Loosely based on the novel from Isaac Asimov, I, ROBOT is an action-packed, CGI-laden thrill ride from director Alex Proyas (THE CROW). Set in 2035, Will Smith stars as Chicago law enforcer Detective Del Spooner. Called upon to investigate the mysterious suicide of scientist Dr. Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell), Spooner deduces that Lanning didn't kill himself but was, in fact, murdered. Lanning worked for the US Robotics headquarters, where he constructed friendly robots designed to help humans with mundane tasks. Lanning's creations are prevalent all over the city, and have been fully integrated into the culture. They are allegedly programmed not to harm humans, but as Spooner digs deeper, his investigations lead him to a new type of robot that Lanning was working on before his death, and one of these models--the highly charismatic Sonny--becomes the prime suspect in the case. Spooner bears a grudge against robots due to an unfortunate incident, so his case against Sonny is met with shrugs of indifference from colleagues who know his prejudices all too well. Fortunately he meets an ally, and a romantic interest, in Dr. Susan Calvin (Bridget Moynahan), who agrees to help him. As Sonny is cured of his violent tendencies, the other robots amass across the city, working on the assumption that they need to control humanity in order to safeguard its future. Director Proyas unleashes a fearsome arsenal of special effects, while Spooner and Calvin chase the errant robots all over the city. Sonny's facial features and voice are digitally manipulated from the actor Alan Tudyk, lending an unnerving element of humanity to the character. Smith and Moynahan give convincing performances throughout, and as the action races towards a nail-biting conclusion, the message of the movie suggests that technologies built to help mankind could also provide its downfall.

Good movie, but did the writers read Asimov at all??
I'd like to start with this Isaac Asimov quote: 'Eye-sci-fi has an audience that is fundamentally different from that of science fiction. In order for eye-sci-fi to be profitable it must be seen by tens of millions of people; in order for science fiction to be profitable it need be read by only tens of thousands of people. This means that some ninety percent (perhaps as much as ninety-nine percent) of the people who go to see eye-sci-fi are likely never to have read science fiction. The purveyors of eye-sci-fi cannot assume that their audience knows anything about science, has any experience with the scientific imagination, or even has any interest in science fiction. But, in that case, why should the purveyors of eye-sci-fi expect anyone to see the pictures? Because they intend to ... If such a thing were made, no one would go to see it; or, if it were so good that it would indeed pull a small audience, it would not be thought of as science fiction of any kind.' (Isaac Asimov on Science Fiction, 'The Boom of Science Fiction', pp.125--128) Asimov is probably turning in his grave. The movie epitomises everything he hated about sci-fi movies - the overriding need for violence and action scenes,'monsters destroying cities', special effects in the extreme, and various forms of collateral damage. With the exception of the Three Laws, the movie seems to bear no relation to the book, or indeed any other of the Robot books - for example, humans happily in direct sunlight!? What happened to the events in the ground car in 'The Naked Sun'? This is but one example of how Asimov's brilliant Laws, concepts and studies of the previous in his books are flouted at every turn in the movie, causing me to, as a great Asimov fan, alternately laugh and cringe. The graphics are impressive, and the acting often good, but it seriously riled me, how little the writers and director evidently knew of the books. Overall, it's not a bad movie - I kind of enjoyed it when I finally managed to distance it from the books. But, it's only good as a general, run-of-the-mill sci-fi movie. If you are looking for even a slight similarity or homage to Asimov's masterpieces, look elsewhere. I sadly doubt the writers even read the Robot books before making this.

I, Robot is a very good attempt at adapting Asimov's work for the cinema. The CGI effects are excellent. This 2 DVD version includes interesting material about making the film and the backgound. Has been shown on TV numerous times but still well worth having your own copy.

Having converted most of my old video collection to DVD I was thrilled to find this film gem in digital format. If you watch this in widescreen format, it really does the battle scene great justice; coupled with surround sound, you'll be gripped by the amazing cinematography. I would recommend the director's cut that includes scenes about the relationship between the lead character and his estranged wife and helps you to understand the motivation behind his decision. The run time is 183 minutes for the directors cut and 120 minutes for the cinema version. I was, however, disappointed by the lack of extras, which any fan of this classic would expect to be included. another one of Will Smith's best movies. based on society in 2035, functioning with robots who are part of society. i love the action in this movie which is evident throughout, and definately another gripping movie of the awesome WS.
