Frequently interpreted as a parable about artists left to stand alone and face persecution during the McCarthy-era Hollywood blacklistings, the film was declared un-American by none other than John Wayne--apparently he was offended by the film's ending, which shows Sheriff Kane removing his badge and tossing it in the dirt.

I was a cinema projectionist for 54 years and I remember showing this film when it was first released in 1952 and it's still just as enjoyable today. Thank heaven for video.     Well made film, all now stars of yesteryear, . It brought back memories of my childhood, seeing it when it was first released. My late father had seats booked every Friday evening for all the family to go to the cinema. Happy days.
