This Gerry Anderson Sci-fi series has been rightly re-evaluated. I myself did not fully appreciate it until seeing it again on DVD (mind you I was very very young when i first saw it on TV.) And that is the key-watching it with adult eyes. I think it took many by surprise at the time that Gerry Anderson (of Thunderbirds/Stingray fame) could produce such an adult series. Though, to be fair, this started with Captain Scarlet and UFO which had very adult themes eg. aliens killing humans and duplicating them (Scarlet) or using human organs to prolong their lives (UFO). However, both those two series had lots of fast action and super-futuristic vehicles/machines to appeal to the very young also. Space 1999 on the other hand is about humans struggling for survival in space and the stories ... This Gerry Anderson Sci-fi series has been rightly re-evaluated. Yes there are futuristic space vehicles and excellent (for the time) special effects but it is the thought-provoking stories that stand out. These offer, at least in most of the first season, few easy solutions found in other sci-fi shows-in fact many stories have no answers and are left open. This, for the time, was very unusual (2001 a space odyssey having achieved this on film) and prompted the American backers (ITC America) to demand more action and less thinking in season 2 to the detriment of the series. So really, the first season was ahead of its time and subsequent series such as Babylon 5, the new Battlestar Galactica and others have used this approach. I highly recommend this series (particularly season 1)and i am pleased that i took a second look when it was released on DVD (the DVD release of UFO prompted me to do this) This first volume sets the scene as the moon leaves earths orbit and the journey begins!
