Fenn Street Gang Series 1 DVD
Delivered exactly as advertised. Probably the best of the 3 series, despite Malcolm McFee (Peter Craven) and Penny Spencer (Sharon) being missing. I couldn't get this item from any other source so I was pleased I could find it via eBay.

Fenn Street Gang limps along
This is series one of three they made, and comes on three discs with seven episodes to each dvd. Most of the old Characters from Fenn street's 5C class are still with us. Except for some cheeky young geezer who tries to convince us that he is Peter Craven, and while he occasionally does even sound a bit like him, it never really rings true. Thankfully none of the rest of the old gang has transmogrified, because with new faces this might well become pretty much even blander than it already is. John Alderton thankfully shows his face in a few episodes as their old teacher, Bernard "privet" Hedges, and they still seem to call him "Sir", and strangely these episodes are some of the good ones on the dvd. And, well thats pretty much that. Without the 'its us against the teachers' maguffin, that we got every week with 'Please Sir' they often seem to flounder. Its only our prior affection for the old Fenn street 5C crowd that keeps us viewing at all. in the hope it will get better. Sometimes it does, but often as not the old magic doesn't last to long. I will leave it a few months then watch it through again, maybe it will be better with a second viewing, who knows? But in my heart i now know the reason that I could not remember these 3 series, while fondly remembering the three 'Please sir' series that ran from 1968 - 70, when i could not have been more than five to seven years old when i saw them. Of the two phrases 'flogging a dead horse' is maybe a little unkind, as the potential is clearly there, so maybe 'Fish out of water' is nearer the mark.

Almost as good as Please Sir
This is a spin-off from Please Sir which does not work quite as well. The success of Please Sir was the inter-relation between a bunch of free-spirited kids, and John Alderton as the well-meaning but naive teacher who somehow manages to relate to them. With that inter-relation broken, Fenn Street does not work so well, just as Please Sir flopped once John Alderton left and another bunch of kids came in. It is significant that the best episodes of Fenn Street are those where John Alderton makes a guest appearance. Two of the kids are played by different actors. Leon Vitali now plays Peter Craven, but does not have the same good looks and suave style as Malcolm McFee. Against this, Carol Hawkins makes a much better Sharon than Penny Spencer did, as shown by their subsequent acting careers. ... This is a spin-off from Please Sir which does not work quite as well. Duffy is still Jack-the-Lad, not quite making it; Sharon is the flirt now working in a boutique; Dunstable is still simple but kind; Maureen is the still the religious whiner unsure of herself; and Frankie Abbott is still a big-mouthed poser. It is wise to concentrate on just five characters. Each episode deals with a situation where these characteristics are exploited. Over all, the series is pleasant enough light-weight situation comedy.
