As is noted within the games' menu for arcade mode, "an experience so classic it's practically coin operated". This is a very good version of Contra. It's got all the elements that you remember from the NES days, the sound is absolutely vibrant and fits the tone of the game perfectly. The graphics are absolutely beautiful, I don't think I've ever seen Contra side scroller that ever looked this good before. It's pretty cool too because you were able to swap between two weapons in your inventory at the same time. I guess you were able to do that in Contra 3, Alien Wars, though I've never played that one yet. Anyway, that element is really cool. They do bring back the classic from behind ake perspective like levels where the barrels are being rolled at you. I think it was the end of the 4th or 5th level, where you'll blow your top at what actually happens. I'm not going to say and spoil it for anyone because it's really pretty cool. Ingenious game design I must say. As I've said in my review for Gradius for the NES, it's a Konami so I expect a lot...and they delivered as usual. You know, Konami is like the kid that you expect to get straight A's in school, and the one that gets constant D's is like...well LJN or Tradewest or something like that... but anyway yeah, it's awesome. However, be prepared to have your ass handed to you. This game is very hard and you have to play through a few times to get patterns down and get used to the slight learning curve of the control scheme. I would suggest starting this game on easy, because normal is quite hellish. You definitely need to practice up first before moving on. I cringe just thinking about how hard is... As far as I know there is no 30 lives code or anything like that, but then again I didn't actually check. Would actually make sense if they did something like that as it seems they tried to stay true to the source material, so to speak. This game is fun and hard- cough- challenging. Plus it is packed with summaries of every previous contra game and let's you play the original contra from the menu, just to remind yourself to get back on that horse and try again. You will not just run through the game like the you tube video. You must grow to enjoy dying for every inch of screen, and while not as disgusting as the ps2 versions, the levels remain inventive and -snort- well, I'm sure I'll see them some day. Graphics are worthy, if the avatars are bland you might say this iteration is still tailored to kids, despite the learning curve. Goes back to the pick up weapons system of the original instead of the revolving trio used recently, which adds to the thrill while bacrificing bome btrategy. Ever feel burveiled? An awesome take on a classic game! The double screen takes some getting used to but worth it for gameplay. It hails to the original Contra with classic weapons and even hints of the original soundtrack. Boss fights are hard but not impossible and it comes with "Contra Museum" which goes through the whole Contra legacy. A must have for any Nintendo DS collection. Multi-player is available but ONLY with 2 Nintendo DS / 2DS /3DS systems and 2 game cards. Lots of fun!

If you remember the first Contra games from the 80's and early 90's no warning is necessary for those who don't be warned this game is highly addictive and will leave you with a lot less hair than when you started. Like its predecessors Contra 4 provides you with a real sense of accomplishment when you finish a level or complete a challenge and even though you'll curse the game more often than not you just can't put it down. I often found myself getting so frustrated I just shut the DS off only to be back 10 minutes later trying that same challenge. The story mode itself isn't very long and when you get skilled enough you could probably play through the game in under an hour. Some of the end of level bosses, Jungle and Factory spring to mind, are also a reimagining of some of the classics rather than completely new ones which isn't altogether bad as they'll still creep you out when you see them and bring back lots of memories. Some of the levels can be pretty short especially the indoor ones and it would have been nice if the developers had taken some time to lengthen them and design a mini boss for those stages as well. Another down side is that you always have to start from the beginning like the previous games so you can't pick a favourite level and just play through it or take on a specific boss although 5 of the bosses are available as Rematch challenges. I often get the urge to replay a level like the Harvest Yard or the Harbor but to have to play through all the others first puts me off. Also once you die its very difficult to continue through the game successfully so being able to react to a situation where you're going to die by switching weapons or double tapping A to drop the upgraded weapon becomes as much a skill as dodging bullets, avoiding the enemy and blowing the hell out of everything on the screen. The unlockable content is a bit of a let down although you can unlock the original Contra and Super Contra by completing some of the challenges so you basically get an extra 2 games included which is great for Contra fans like myself because honestly who still has a working NES or SNES after all this time, but other than that it just amounts to a few extra characters from the previous games. The included comics are nice and seeing some of the promo posters for the previous games is great but more info on the design of the games would have gone down well and some concept sketches for Contra 4 would have been awesome. My other gripe is the cinematics, in this day and age not to have a fully rendered opening scene or ending especially for those who manage to finish the game on hard is a bit of a let down although the developer's style holds true to the feel of the previous games in that regard. Personally I would have loved to see Black Viper getting his just desserts from different angles across both DS screens. The co-op play is classic Contra being able to team up with a "buddy" and take on the aliens reminds me so much of the days growing up playing Contra on the NES with friends racing to the edge of the screen to try force each other off, trying to beat each other to the power ups and ending up being bigger rivals with your team mate than the aliens. All in all this is a very fitting tribute to the legend of Contra and perfect to represent the 20th anniversary of the series, all my gripes and moans aside. If you give this game half a chance it will suck you in and never let you go.Read full review
Well what can I say if you are a fan of contra or any fast-paste sidescrolling action games this is for you. First off the gameplay well you can play as 4 different chatecters and this is the hardest contra game I played to date and I am a hard core contra fan and thats what we conttra fans like hard game s to test are limits 2 differences form the oiginal 3 games. First of all there two screens so you got to watch the gun fire on both screens. second of all you can hold to power-ups so that helps alot. Next the exrtas well you don't get to much you know, you got just the options so what, but the is a really cool extra where you can read all about the past contra games, really cool because if you don't know anything about contra you can learn the history and mabye try them out. Next up story the story of the of game is a bit hard to follow but I think the aliens from the first 3 games are back for revenge or something like that. Controls The control are pretty simplly but it works L and R switches your powerups and B jumps and X shouts and Y is the rope they are feel really good on DS and works great. Sound & Picture The sound for this game is exallent it is crystull clear and just awsome and don't be foulled this game has bright graphics and looks great on the DS and look better than any other 2D shooter out there. Overall this game is a must have and you can get it for $10 these days Konami did a great job and should be pround of there shelf for making such a great game this game gets a 10/10 a must have.Read full review
