About this product

Product Information

THE OUTER LIMITS: THE ORIGINAL SERIES -- SEASON 2 is a little more problematic as a purchase than the first season, as it was less artistically successful and only endured for 17 episodes. Hence, this set consists of three discs rather than the four in the first collection, and its offerings are more uneven, including some episodes that simply didn't work. On the other hand, among those 17 shows is included what could very easily be the finest single hour of science fiction ever done on television, "Demon With A Glass Hand" -- a show that was, beyond question, the best hour of science fiction ever done up to that time on American television. Additionally, there are five other programs, "Soldier," "Cold Hands, Warm Heart," "The Inheritors, Parts 1 and 2," "Wolf 359," and "The Duplicate Man," that offer some combination of superb acting, inventive scripting, or inspired direction well worth watching; and others, such as "Expanding Human," "Invisible Enemy," "Keeper Of the Purple Twilight," and "Counterweight," have some sufficiently eerie moments -- and most of the rest aren't bad, either; even the worst of them, "The Premonition" and "The Probe," which closed out the original run of the series, are entertaining to see, at least once. The set uses the same layout as the earlier volume, with three double-sided discs that break down as four shows on the first side of each and two on the second. The volume seems to be mastered a little higher than that on the preceding set, giving Harry Lubin's scoring for the second season programs its best ever showcase -- that's usually a virtue, though not always, as the makers had a tendency on occasion to use orchestral "stings" in some unlikely moments. The image is generally razor-sharp, the only notable exception being "Soldier," in which the reels after the opening section of the episode take on a very grainy texture -- it's not too serious watching the episode normally, but speeding through to a specific scene or freezing on a shot does bring out this flaw. Each disc is programmed with a menu that is relatively simple to use, but a bit awkward to move in and out of -- and each disc opens with the same annoying MGM intro reel, a slightly shorter but no less tiresome version of which comes up after each episode. The fact that the series' only two-part show, "The Inheritors," is split between two sides is also annoying -- couldn't the producers have simply stuck part one on side two, to make it simpler to watch the show? This reviewer found himself coming away with a bit more respect for most of episodes -- "Demon With A Glass Hand" has been impressing this viewer for 40 years, across 20 screenings, but for "Expanding Human" to play as well as it does here is a surprise; without commercial interruption, there is a certain rhythm to that episode, as well as several of the others, that has eluded this reviewer for more than 30 years. Seeing the shows in their optimum states helps, of course -- "Demon With A Glass Hand" looks extraordinary, and most of the rest aren't too far behind. If the programming of the set were only simpler, it would be perfect as far as it goes, but as long as we're looking at what ought to be here, one has to ask about a pair of OUTER LIMITS rarities that are in the United Artists vaults, "The Unknown" (the pilot episode version of "The Forms Of Things Unknown"), and "Please Stand By," the original unaired pilot for the series -- those would have been priceless additions. Come to think of it, they would make a prize disc of their own.

Still holds up well after all these years.

Although the second season only contains 17 episodes, the writing was (in my opinion) much stronger with fantastic story lines that hold up well even with the passage of time. Stories include classics, such as Soldier, Demon with a Glass Hand, I Robot and the only two-parter of the series The Inheritors. These were some of the finest science-fiction stories of their time. Far above the b-rated standard of the time. You will not be disappointed with this set. In some ways this is the best of the two seasons. With the exception of the Zanti Misfits these are my personal favorites. Any fan of classic sci-fi should put these on their must-have list.

  • ABC goofed changing the night

They were very interesting episodes. But back then, in 1964 ABC TV made the mistake of moving the show from Monday night at 6:30pm to Saturday night at 6:30pm. That put it up against the Jackie Gleason show on CBS. That made their ratings drop like a rock and the show was gone after Xmas. Otherwise the show would have stayed on.

  • Creatures, characters and craziness galore! Well worth the cost.

Great show. Sci fi and horror suspense at it's best. Let the Control Voice take over and enjoy this 1960s anthology.

  • Best '60s TV Show

TOL was one of my favorite shows from the '60s. This is a nice set. The discs are clean, and the printed materials are in great shape.
