Title: New picture book tells Skokie's history Author: Mike Isaacs Publisher: Skokie Review Date: 8/9/2010 If Richard Witry and Amanda Hanson had their way, there might be a different title on the cover of the their new picture book about Skokie's ever-changing history. But the authors are not complaining whatsoever. "Skokie," part of the Images of America series published by Arcadia Publishing, ended up just as they had hoped. Filled with more than 200 photos alongside meticulously worded descriptions, the book successfully tracks the changing story of a village from its earliest days onward. A fascinating piece of local history gets told within the book's compact 127 paperback pages. The book, Witry says, could easily have been called, "Skokie: A Cultural Journey." Many towns have similar books, many of them well done and many of them published by Arcadia as well. But not all of the books carry a central theme from beginning to end. "There is this changing of the different cultural groups coming in during Skokie's history, and it's really a running thread throughout the book," Hanson said. "Skokie in general is sort of a reflection of U.S. history. The real estate boon, the different waves of immigrants, Manifest Destiny -- they all played out here, too." Arcadia's mission is all about preserving local history one piece at a time, which is why the titles and layouts in its series remain consistent. Its Images of America series has chronicled the history of communities from Bangor, Maine, to Manhattan Beach, Calif. "With more than 200 vintage black and white photographs, each title celebrates a town or region, bringing to life the people, places, and events that define the community," the publisher states. Witry, vice president of the Skokie Historical Society and a resident expert of sorts on Skokie history, and Hanson, facility manager of the Skokie Heritage Museum, were perfect choices to help add Skokie to the Arcadia collection. There is a 30-year age difference between the two; Witry is nearly 60 and Hanson just turned 30. But their passion to preserve and celebrate the village's rich history made for an easy collaboration on the project, they say. "Our purpose in doing this besides the opportunity to do it is to get the photos and history to people," Witry said. "None of the archives in this building (The Skokie Heritage Museum) do anyone any good if they're hidden in that cabinet never to be seen." Divided into five chapters -- or more accurately five eras -- Images of America's "Skokie" covers the Potawatomie and Macouten settlement from the 1500s to 1840; the Western European settlement from 1841 to 1920; the Western European settlement from 1921 to 1949; the Jewish arrival from 1950 to 1980; and the Indo-Asian arrival from 1981 to present day. "Once the Pottawatomi were relocated west of the Mississippi," the authors write, "the area became ripe for migration from the east." The book is filled with a rounded and comprehensive sense of history, but the authors know that the photographs are really what sell it. Emphasizing the shopworn saying that "a picture is worth a thousand words," Witry and Hanson calculate their book is "worth 200,000 words, which, in turn, is the equal of an 800-page novel with 250 words per page." Selecting the 212 photos that appear in the book was no easy challenge. They laid out hundreds of photos and then began the difficult task of eliminating some of them. The closer they came to the allotted number, the more difficult the job became. Witry said he would have liked to have included a photograph of Shirley Shevick and Mickey Bode, two early members of the Skokie Historical Society. But in the end, the authors eliminated photos based on how well t
Synopsis
Settled in the 1840s, incorporated as Niles Centre in 1888, German and Luxembourger immigrants founded Skokie and created a rural community of farms and greenhouses. A short-lived real estate boom in the 1920s gave Skokie its current boundaries, streets, and sewer systems. Due to the Great Depression, however, these paved roadways remained vacant until after World War II. Aided by the construction of the Edens Expressway, Skokie experienced tremendous growth and became a bustling suburban community. Many of the families that settled in Skokie during this time were Jewish. In the last quarter century, other families moved to the suburb, many with Indo-Asian origins, leading to the ethnically diverse community that Skokie has become today., Settled in the late 1840s and incorporated as Niles Centre in 1888, Skokie was founded by immigrants from Germany and Luxembourg who created a small-town rural community filled with farms and greenhouses. In the last quarter century, other families moved to the suburb, many with Indo-Asian origins, leading to the ethnically diverse community that Skokie has become today. Using photographs and documents from the Skokie Historical Society's extensive collection, Richard J. Witry, vice president of the Skokie Historical Society and coeditor of Chronology of Events: Niles Township, Village of Niles Center/Skokie, 1500 A.D.-2000 A.D, and Amanda J. Hanson, facility manager of the Skokie Heritage Museum, illustrate Skokie's progression from a small rural community to a diverse suburb. The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today. Arcadia is proud to play in the preservation of local heritage, making history available to all. Book jacket.
