It's difficult to grasp how brutal conditions were at Parchman Farm prison when these recordings were made.
As an example, inmates were forced to RUN to work , sometimes distances of seven miles or more , before dawn had broken , so they could start work from first light.
This was not punishment , this was slavery.
Prison occupants were black , their guards were white.
It was the Mississippi delta , just after the Second World War.
Remarkable then , that they could make music of such timeless beauty , given the circumstances of their imprisonment .
I'm sure that there were men and women here who were guilty of awful crimes , that does not excuse the terrible inhumanity surrounding their captivity.
Listen to these powerful songs, and listen to the blues.
