Synopsis
The partnership between birds of prey and humans is a primal connection that has existed for many thousands of years. Working with hunting birds is still integral to many cultures, and falconry is again popular today as humans seek a more meaningful relationship with nature. The foundations of falconry lie within the bond between falconer and bird, which is rooted in the bird's natural survival instincts and its feeling sate in that relationship. Falconry otters the novice falconer a compact, illustrated introduction to the art and practice of falconry. Illustrated with more than 300 images, many of which provide precise step-by-step instructions, the book teaches the enthusiast how to familiarize a bird through 'manning', training with a lure, training using a glove, managing a bird's diet and weight, hooding, free flight training, and training owls, among many other skills and techniques., Falconry is the sport of taking wild prey (or quarry) in its natural state and habitat by means of trained hawks. It has never been easy, and the present day conditions add many obstacles to the achievement of success in the sport. Mere enthusiasm, momentarily fired by the sight of trained hawks being flown to the lure at a fair, or on a TV programme, is not an adequate base from which to launch oneself into this most difficult of sports. A great deal of dedication and study is needed before a beginner gains a proper understanding of how to manage a hawk. Falconry is currently practiced in many countries around the world. The falconer's traditional choice of bird is the northern goshawk and peregrine falcon. In contemporary falconry in both North America and the UK, they remain popular, although Harris' hawks and red-tailed hawks are likely more widely used. Falconry provides a photographic introduction to hawking practices today, offering the novice and enthusiast an insight into this fascinating pastime. Learn how to train birds of prey and prepare them for displays. Illustrated with 300 photographs that will instruct and inspire, Falconry is a fascinating pictorial celebration of this craft which dates back to as early as 2,000 BC., 300 authentic photographs showing falconry in its historic and modern forms Informative text explains essential equipment and training processes Appeals to anyone interested in birds of prey, Illustrated with 300 photographs, Falconry provides a photographic introduction to the sport of hawking and falconry today, with details of all the tools and techniques required.
