What we have to remember is that Meditation is a practice. We aim to get better progressively. We should not go into it thinking we will see immediate results. What is important is to begin and once begun, to continue the practice diligently.
Like everyone else, reading about meditation was useful. It gave ideas, explained benefits etc etc; but it is useless unless you actually DO IT.
Like many, I had trouble doing it as the mind wanders a lot. A guided meditation app was what everyone recommended. As I am a technological luddite with so smartphone, this was the next best thing.
I have been using it religiously since I got it. I can say my practice is now slowly becoming a habit; like all good things in your life need to.
For other beginners, just get started and do it for a week. Once you do it for a week; it will become a part of your routine.
