SynopsisDecember 7, 1941, as the great battleships Arizona, Oklahoma, and Utah lie paralyzed and burning in the aftermath of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, a team of U.S. Navy salvage divers headed by Edward C. Raymer are hurriedly flown to Oahu from the mainland. Their two-part orders are direct and straightforward: (1) rescue as many trapped sailors and Marines as possible, and (2) resurrect what remains of America's once mighty Pacific fleet. Descent Into Darkness tells their story. Book jacket.

  • Insight Into a Dangerous Profession

Commander Raymer's memoir of his diving experiences in WWII are an exciting insight into not only the hazards and unexpected horrors of underwater salvage work but also paint a picture of life in Hawaii after Japanese attack. Diving on the heavily damaged ships, there are many challanges which require out of the box thinking and innovation. Working long hours with little R&R, he shares the rare adventures of he and his shipmates seeking social opportunities with the scarce women. Wanting to be a part of the war action in the South Pacific, he definitely finds it in a series of risky operations and salvage work in remote, primitive conditions. A remarkable first hand account.
