"Dr. Jamie Koufman has rekindled for us the physiologic link between the stomach and throat. Her contributions have redirected science and benefited the care of millions." -- Clarence Sasaki, M.D. Director, Head & Neck Unit Yale School of Medicine, "Meeting Dr. Jamie Koufman completely changed my life. My symptoms of chronic cough and shortness of breath had been diagnosed since my childhood as asthma. Dr. Koufman identified that I had reflux, not asthma, and guided me step by step how to cure it. I have my life back and I owe it all to Dr. Koufman's insight and help."-- Suze Orman, Host of the Suze Orman Show, CNBC, "Dropping Acid is a culinary masterpiece with the potential to transform the treatment of reflux disease. It is another breakthrough from Dr. Jamie Koufman, one of the most innovative minds in medicine." --Peter Belafsky, M.D., Ph.D. University of California Davis, "Dr. Jamie Koufman is the pre-eminent reflux physician-scientist in the world. This cookbook is the culmination of the many years of her dedicated work on the subject of laryngopharyngeal reflux, focusing on how patients can modify their diets to better treat this insidious condition." --Ramon A. Franco Jr., M.D. Director, Division of Laryngology Harvard Medical School
Synopsis
Dropping Acid: The Reflux Diet Cookbook & Cure is the first book to explain how acid reflux, particularly silent reflux, is related to dietary and lifestyle factors. It also explains how and why the reflux epidemic is related to the use of acid as a food preservative. Dr. Koufman defines the symptoms this shockingly common disease and explains why a change in diet can alleviate some of the most common symptoms. Dropping Acid offers a dietary cure for acid reflux, as well as lists of the best and worst foods for a reflux sufferer. The book's recipes use tasty fats as flavorings, not as main ingredients; included are the recipes for tasty dishes that prove living with reflux doesn't mean living without delicious food.

    Saved my sanity, great information.

I wish I had known of this book when actually having LPR. I could have relaxed in knowing I wasn't nuts, lol. And, would have known some of the "more than likely" triggers....and that yes, there are some food items that are very painful to some and not to others...i.e. Bananas. For me it was avocado which sounded cool and soothing, which was a trigger for me. Very educational, and certainly give you emotional support. I thought I'd never get to eat anything with flavor again..but, following this guideline for almost 2 years, I found out I could have a "tiny" amount with no horrible side effects as tolerance level had come up some. So, even a tiny bit is better than having "none". I couldn't even test taste the foods I was cooking for family...I would cry because I wanted just a ...

  • Most critical review

    Some good informtion.

Very good information but the receipes are a bit over my cooking talents. I thought they would be more simple so on that note I'm disappointed. I like the pages for the acidity of the different foods. There is no recommendation for the type of flour to use and it is confusing on one list an item like avacado is not recommended and then on another list avacado is okay. I guess it is trial and error to bring back what my body will accept and not react to.

  • Great for GERD, no info for diverticulus at the same time.

I have acid reflux and diverticulitis. I researched for over a year for info regarding these two illnesses. The book ties up the GERD reflux info really well but doesn't (so far as I haven't finished reading yet) doesn't address having diverticulitis at the same time. Therefore, the recipes with all the nuts and seeds aren't good for me. Of course, I can just eliminate them but what I really need is for them to re-write the book and include having diverticulitis at the same time as acid reflux. I DO recommend this book highly for those that have acid reflux....very informative.

  • Good information

This book has a lot of good information. The recipes are a little hard to follow, though, as they call for quite a few "special" ingredients, which I don't have access to. There are some that I can use replacements in, I suppose, e.g. using regular mushrooms instead of shiitake or the like. I will be using crab meat instead of scallops, since I don't know where in my area to get scallops, esp. at this holiday season, where I would have to drive into a lot of traffic to go where I might find scallops.

  • It is informative, well done

This book is worth getting. It has lists of what one should eat and what one should not eat! Sadly I am mostly in the what not to eat side. lol But is also gives out a lot of info for those fighting acid reflux. I will not be doing that first week's severe diet, however, as I am under weight.
