I've read the 4th edition. The volume was a big hardback, with many illustrations (not as good as the text) and photographs. This is a textbook all about wood: its morphology, properties, what is made of it (paper pulp, beams, plywood, poles, and so on), how it is traded. Contrary to the title and the introduction, the book ignores other forest products than wood, and most of what is said concerns the U.S. only. In general, this is a decent, no-nonsense textbook: Subjects are well explained, emphasis is given where it should and polemic subjects are honestly discussed. It is also truly introductory and hence highly informative for biologists, engineers, architects, builders and for the public in general.
