The book itself has some wonderful descriptive passages of early 1800s Malta and Maturin has a memorable battle of wits with his French counterpart. This is also one of the more humorous books in the series: drunkenness, a failed love scene, and a large, clumsy dog. O'Brien roughly alternates Aubrey's successes and failures, and this is one of the latter. Only this detracts from what is, otherwise, one of the best books in the series. This particular copy has already been well thumbed.
