Richard Dawkins is an evolutionary biologist who, at the time he wrote the book, was the Simonyi for the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. For most of his life he studied and taught science until it became evident that religion was continually challenging and attacking science, especially in the areas of geology (the age of the earth) and biology (the evolution of lifing things.) These challenges were generally based on a Biblical world view, not in step with what the scientific method has taught us since the so-called Enlightenment. A general rejection of any known fact in science in preference for a doctrine point of scripture caused Dawkins to express his disdain for the effects of a god-centered world view. He began to speak and write about the absurdities of closing one's eyes to the material universe because of mere words in books published in the bronze and iron ages that have held a sacred place in societies for, often, thousands of years. He knew that a public understanding of science could only be achieve by brushing aside the superstitions inherent in religion ... not just the Christian representative, but all religion. This amounted to stating an unpopular notion, god does not exist. God is a delusion. This book gives the best arguments Dawkins could muster to present his case against being blindfolded in a scientific time by doctrine error. Whether one is to a point in life that he can easily see the conflict, or is still grasping at some minor scientific inconsistencies to allow the holding on of faith in a magical being, this book is both educational, and logical in the extreme. I recommend to it anyone going through the angst of questioning faith. Merle H. Graffam, Big Water, Utah Dec. 2017Read full review

Obviously this writer is trapped in a midset that God doesn't exsist to feel good about the way he lives his personal life. It's easy to get into debate and pursue the logics of life and "higher being" but it's harder to look at oneself and analyze the void and anger stored inside a heart that is in pain and agony day by day. An emptiness that only getting to know God Himself can fill. You can start a relationship with God by praying this very simple prayer: Lord Jesus, I repent of my sins. Forgive me for i have wronged you by the way I live. I want to make You my Lord and Savior. After you have prayed this special prayer, get into your Bible, read it for yourself, and stop listening to what other people say about it. Judge for YOURSELF. Welcome to the FAMILY!!!! I feel the joy and genuine happiness AT LAST!!!!!Read full review
I heard about this book when Dawkins appeared on the Bill Maher Show on HBO. To tell the truth, I didn't realize that there are actually books about atheism, and being struck by his wit and intellect, I was eager to find and read the God Delusion. As far as the book itself, Dawkins makes his arguments in clear and relatively easy to understand language. He uses anecdotes and quotes from some of the greatest thinkers of all times, and points out the inaccuracies, bias and sometimes complete fabrications within the Bible and other religious texts. Of course, nothing in this book is going to shake the true believer from his faith. And that is too bad. The God Delusion intelligently makes the case that, while God is a mathematical possibility, His existence is so extraordinarily unlikely that we should probably live our lives as though God doesn't exist at all. And Dawkins intercepts every argument proposed to justify following God. If you have ever wanted to offer rebuttal to your religious friends when they start talking about gaps in the fossil record or the intelligent design theory of creation or the kindness and comfort that their God has bestowed upon them while He smites the people not like them, this book is a great place to start. I recommend reading it with a highlighter nearby. There is an abundance of quotes that you will want to put on your wall. Do NOT buy this book if you are unable to get past the mythology of your upbringing. But do consider the most salient point I got out of the book: your religion and the God you pray to is primarily a result of where you were born and who were your parents. You think God chose to make all those Chinese and Japanese and Hindus and Tongans and Eskimos, when he knows that the vast majority of them will not follow Jesus or Mohammed into heaven? That is just racist, and you know it. I LOVED THIS BOOK.Read full review

The God Delusion by Dr. Richard Dawkins is a most revealing book if the reader is looking for confirmation of the common sense approach to the mythology of god(s). The author doesn't viciously attack religion but discusses why so many people feel so compelled to believe in a higher power, especially a human-like higher power. I'll be forthright and state that if you have an unwavering deeply dedicated belief in God or a god by any other name, there would be little reason to delve into Hawkins Atheistic world. However, if you maintain an open mind and are searching for answers that aren't available to you in church or anywhere within your religion, this is the book for you.
