I swapped a pair of Sonos 5 Gen 1s for a pair of Gen 2s about 18 months ago when the new ones came out and am delighted with the detail of the new speakers. However, what I missed about the original speakers was the headphone facility, so when the opportunity arose to get hold of a Gen 1 I took it, and I am delighted with the quality of the original incarnation all over again! This is a great stand-alone streaming speaker which I now have in my 'study'. As mentioned, it also still has a headphone socket, so I can listen in peace to anything that is not to the taste of others in the household. The Gen 1 Sonos 5 is holding its value well - second hand prices are only about £70 down on what I paid for each of mine new eighteen months ago - but when you revisit them you can see - hear - exactly why. Very easy to recommend!Read full review

Ok. For a small room it going to be just fine. When playing in a large room ( ie you could chase someone around it) it can start to, chuff through the rear port. This is a known problem, this is why the new gen is enclosed so zero port tuning to be concerned with. Not every track deep base from old depech mode will create the problems. For most they would be clueless and not notice it. All sonos products could do with a few more buttons for radio presets. its a faf attempting to go to your phone every bloody time. The room equalisation used from the Apple products does make a difference. worth borrowing ya friends phone if you only use android etc. my apologise for the grammar too much to do and too little time to re read. If others products had connected with a rj45 jack i would have purchased those. but my wife is happy with it so. happy wife, happy life.Read full review

I spent lots of time researching wireless speakers before deciding to invest in Sonos. I tried using Powerline instead of wireless for a while, which seemed to work better for video than audio. I now have a houseful of Sonos devices and have never had an issue with Play 5, Play 1, Soundbar or Sub. They cost a bit more but are so simple to set up and work seamlessly with many devices. We use the Sonos app on an old iPad, which we leave set up in the kitchen. We can also control them from our Sonos app on my mobile phone or my wife's. I know you can stream different music to different rooms using different devices but don't really have the need. Where Sonos falls down is in integration. They are slow to integrate with new services and devices. They should focus on establishing an open platform that anyone can send audio too and publish open standard that are easy to integrate with. They are getting there but it is SLOOW. They support Spotify, Apple Music and the like but have only released support for Amazon Echo/Alexstra in the last days. Years after these devices became popular. There is very little info on how to set this up online, as it is so new. We are entering the age of IoT (Internet of Things), anyone who is designing a consumer device that does not publish open standards that allow it to speak with other devices will soon be out of business. Sonos needs a wake up call. They have a dominant position but it won't last much longer if they don't give consumers (like me) what they want. Proprietary is dead - open up or be left behind as irrelevant.Read full review

I have a few other SONOS products which are all equally as well built at this Play 5 but none are as capable of rocking the house as this one. Fantastic sound quality on everything I've played on it so far and no distortion or waffle, just solid bass, clear mids and vocals and crystal clear high ends. But beware.... as with all the other SONOS products I have purchased, once you have one, they sound so good you'll just want to keep adding ..... wonder how it would sound with Play 5 as a Stereo Pair :-)

This Sonos Play 5 was packaged well, was easy to set up on my iPhone, my iPad mini, my PC and works splendidly. No glitches. I'm impressed that when you power down the speaker and move it to a new location, it boots up and comes on with no further action required. The sound quality is excellent. As it is fairly pricey I purchased just one as I don't feel it is so important to have stereo. I'm very pleased with this unit, and will gradually add other units to our home.
