I watched this movie on Netflix, thru my computer. I have bought many movies that I have seen before, especially if I liked them. I have a list and faithfully look at it to get the best deals for my viewing pleasure. This movie was really very good. It was about a group of women who are fascinated with the works of Jane Austen and form a reading group so they can discuss the books. It also brings the personal stories of these women to the forefront. There is also a male that has joined the group. Brought in by one of the friends as a "diversion" to another of the groups divorce proceedings. Typically a boy meets girl, likes that girl. The girl however, wants the boy to cozy up to her divorcing friend. It's a great story with bits of each of the women's (and man's) life. A must see chick flick if that is your thing.Read full review
I enjoyed the book. The movie is great, but the characters are younger in the movie than in the book. As an avid reader and movie watcher, I enjoyed the Jane Austin Book Club in both written and movie forms. As a Jane Austin reader this book reminds us how good Austen's books really are. For those who haven't read any Jane Austin, this novel makes us want to read all of the Jane Austin titles mentioned in both the book and the movie. These are the Austin books mentiones, and not in any particular order: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion. In cinclusion, as the characters delve into Austen's literature, the club members find themselves dealing with life experiences that parallel the themes of the books they're reading.
I really enjoyed this film. I bought it cold, not having seen any previews for the movie (although I did see one while I was waiting for the movie to arrive. I love all things Austen, and was pleasantly surprised to find a book club, randomly discussing all of Jane's books, while events occur in the members' lives that really mirror the book plots. Or maybe vice versa. At any rate, reading the books first makes you enjoy the movie, but I also think that watching the movie makes you want to read the books! It's definitely a "feel-good" movie, probably even a "chick flick," but I'm a sucker for happy endings with unexpected twists, which is what Austen always gives us. My sons liked it too, though.
My sister and I decided to redbox this movie one night. I didn't want to tell her that the movie sounded like a complete bore, plus my sister has really great taste, so I hunkered down and watched the flick.. Well, I am really glad that I watched the movie, because it's now one of my favorites! It took me completely by suprise! I love the story line, each character, and how they become such a tight knit group. I especially love Allegra's story, seeing as how I myself am a lesbian woman. I think that watching this with my sister helped her to be a little bit more comfortable with my sexuality. I am so happy that I now own the movie!
Great story + good actors
