Well, as a writer, this isn't much of a challenge. Let's see, you're given a universe that's already been developed in three worldwide best selling real time strategy games and in four or five books before yours, and the best selling, highest subscribed massively multiplayer online rpg in history. So you've got a whole world of characters, landscapes, battles, and history going back a thousand years. Now write a 300 book story about some of these characters. Sounds pretty impossible to mess this up. And Christie Golden does not dissappoint. She takes the world of Draenei, the homeland of the Orcs, and develops on the rich history that the orcs had and tells of what became of them and how they went from peaceful factions of strong, proud creatures, to being bloodthirsty monsters of evil's puppetry. After reading this, you will not only have more knowledge of the vast universe of Warcraft mythos, but you will have a whole new outlook on the events when you play through the games. Right now I'm reading all the books in chronological order (according to where they happen in the warcraft timeline) and playing the games again along with them. So I started with The Last Guardian, which was also excellent, and then read this one before replaying the original Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. And having had the breadth of the background from these two books made it a whole new experience. So if you're a super dork about warcraft, this is a great way to get to know the orcs more intimately and see past the evil red eyes and death spells and see them as the people they once were and, as of Warcraft 3 and beyond, the people that Thrall is trying to bring back.Read full review
This well paced and interesting novel deals with the previous events leading to the birth of the Orcish Horde up to its passing trough the Dark Portal. The plot develops at an steady pace, and has the necessary twists and turns to keep you interested during the entire book. It does not assume that you have previous knowledge of the Warcraft universe or its characters, thus it is accesible and attractive to anyone who likes fantasy novels and enjoys light reading. If you happen to be a fan of the Warcraft universe (as I am), then you will thoroughly enjoy this novel, and should seriously consider including it to your personal library. For the Horde!
This is really a don't put down until you finish book. Finally an explanation as to how the Horde was created and how it happened .. How wasy it is to manipulate people (read orcs) and make them believe anything .. Sargeras minions convince a Shaman that his wife is bringing news for the ether world and he falls for it .. He is trusted by his peers and he makes others believe too .. E pluribus unum .. From the many clans one Horde .. The dranei becomes the enemy and when they are all but destroyed and nothing is left in their world .. They are teletransported to Azeroth .. and the orcs attack anyone and everything .. Great tie-in to Lord of the Clans ...Happy reading !!
I really loved this book! I decided to roll a Warlock on the game afterwards. I definitely recommend this to any WoW fan!
