If you have a Sinclair ZX Spectrum +/Plus, this is a must get (along with a new power supply and one of the many DIVMMC devices out there that load games instantly from a regular SD card). If you do not know when the membrane of your Spectrum+ was last changed, or if it was never changed, get one! Apparently the membranes get quite brittle over time. I last used mine about 5 years ago and they were perfectly fine. But like many, I decided recently to buy one of the new wave of DIVMMC devices to load games from SD cards. So, I thought that I had best clean the contacts on the edge connector and check for any other issues while waiting delivery. The Membranes of both Spectrum+ machines just fell apart on inspection. Both had been stored in cardboard boxed out of the light, so it is not UV related, it must simply be a chemical breakdown of some sort. So, I am in the position of having 3 Spectrums (a grey 128 that also no longer works), none work, new toy that needs a Spectrum to test! I know, first world problems ;) Finding this online was to be frank, a cure for what was a highly stressful situation. (and yes, I am prone to being overdramatic right now, just lost a relative I had spent a decade+ caring for so my mental state is not so great) When it arrived, it fitted straight in, with minimal fuss and bother. There are tutorials online which are worth looking for and I used those as a guide. I am now happily enjoying old games on a real Spectrum (though I will have to composite mod one of the Spectrum + Machines for better video quality) I am considering getting a 2nd as a spare/back-up to put away for emergencies. But is that a false economy? I mean the others were stored out of sunlight, but over 5 years just deteriorated. When I next have a failure of my Spectrum + membrane, will I open the package only to find it has also got too brittle over time and just fall apart? I will revisit this when I have a working +128.
