Having heard an Ampeg V4B close up I knew I had to get that sound. However, my budget doesn't stretch to Ampeg gear, and I'm not that keen on heavy fragile tube bass amps. I don't like standard bass overdrive /distortions - they just mess up my tone and sound nothing like a real amp. The Sansamp VT is just the job. Anywhere from thumpy Motown to full on grind this box does it. I use it mainly as an add on, but a lot of people have their's on all the time. I have it set up to give an Entwistle/Stranglers/Jam/pub-rock tone. I got this to replace a Behringer BDI21, which is basically a Sansamp rip-off. The construction of the Behringer is very similar and it was a quarter of the price of the Sansamp. However, the Sansamp sounds noticeably more 3 dimensional. The Behringer sounds a bit flat in comparison, (still not too bad though - great for the money). The Sansamp VT seems like a lot of money for basically a box and a few components, but it will give you a wide range of organic tube amp tones. Nothing else sounds like this short of a real proper tube bass amp.Read full review
VT Bass is a great tool for any bassist who wants to add a plethora of available tones (clean to overdriven), or in my case, to warm up, fatten up and add a great sounding tube-like tone to my current gear. I use it as an always on tone shaping tool, and it works wonders with my Gallien Krueger 700RB II amp and GK NEO 412 box. I get the best of both worlds this way - quick growly punchy GK tone with a bit of that fat Ampegish tube like classic tone. I advise everyone to get the v2 that has a speaker sim defeat button, since with the speaker sim on, things can get a bit too clanky and trebly. I sold my v1 and got a v2, and I couldn't be happier. In conclusion, it's not just a tool to make a crappy gear sound good, it can make a great gear sound even better too!
I use this on my recording board into a Ampeg BA108. It makes that already identifiable Ampeg even more SVT-like, at a lower volume. It DI's well, also, altho' I tend to use it as a distortion/EQ in front of the mic'd amp. I have the Californian pedal, also, and will buy more in this series as prices and funds permit.

This pedal is quite possibly the best "can't play without it" pedal I've ever owned. Running into a clean amp signal, with the gain and character settings just right and a little eq'ing, it gets as close to an SVT sound as I've ever heard. SVT..... without the backache....or the roadies!

This pedal has every sound imaginable. I use it to balance out the level between two different basses. It does this very easily, and the TONE is really good! I am a huge fan of Tech21 and all their products.
