Synopsis
This award-winning cookbook features more than 100 of the recipes that Laura Ingalls Wilder chronicles in her classic Little House books. A great gift for Little House fans and anyone who wants more information about what life on the prairie was really like. With this cookbook, you can learn how to make classic frontier dishes like corn dodgers, mincemeat pie, cracklings, and pulled molasses candy. The book also includes excerpts from the Little House books, fascinating and thoroughly researched historical context, and details about the cooking methods that pioneers like Ma Ingalls used, as well as illustrations by beloved artist Garth Williams. This is a chance to dive into the world of Laura Ingalls Wilder, American pioneer, women's club member, and farm homesteader. This book has been widely praised and is the winner of the Western Heritage Award from the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. The Horn Book praised it as "a culinary and literary feast."

    Not a typical cookbook

This is not a typical cookbook. It's part cookbook and part historical reference. I LOVE how this book is written, each chapter provides extensive historical context for the recipes, excerpts from the little house books, followed by the author's recreation of the recipes based on her research.

I was very disappointed. I opened my book to look through it and threw it in the trash . It looked like it had mold on it and inside the pages were small white things. I don’t think they were bugs as they weren’t moving but I wasn’t going to bring it into my home. I really wish I had thought to take pictures but I was so grossed out

  • Fun Read For Little House Fans

I loved the Little House series of books since my fifth grade teacher used to read chapters to us at the end of each school day. This is a fun addition to that set. I was always curious about Vanity Cakes, since I have never read about them or heard about them anywhere but these books. That recipe is here so I can try it. Reading this cookbook made me glad for my modern kitchen, as it was very enlightening as to how things were.

  • Girlfriend just loves it!

I bought this for my girlfriend as a gift. (She's a big "Little House ..." fan) She just loves it! Says that it's well-rooted in the content of the original books and provides real insight into the food they would have eaten at the time. I recommend it.

  • Lightweight with good features

In browsing the cookbook, there are some recipes that I will be trying. Not only does it have recipes, but it has stories also. Can't wait to sit down and read from cover to cover.
