BBC sci-fi at its understated best! With scripting by Terry Nation and James Burke on board as scientific advisor how could they go wrong! Well, very easily actually. What makes this series work is the finely trodden line between the mundane every day realities of living on a settlement on the moon and the weave of a very good script interspersed with nuggets of excitement and bureaucratic intrigue along the way. The main interest for me was at the time this was made, for the very first time a tv production company had sat down and thought, lets make a tv series firmly grounded in scientific authenticity on how it really would be like to live on the moon. To my mind they did a very good job. The BBC managed to avoid the trap of burying the viewer under an wealth of scientific data and yet still maintaining a balance between scientific fact while keeping the viewer entertained. Okay the sets are a bit low budget and by todays standards the special effects are a bit lacking. This does not detract from the viewers enjoyment. Without the glam factor and aliens of the Gerry Andersons production of UFO etc, this could have been a very boring story that at best could quite as easily have been set in the company boardrooms of earthbound corporation. Its excellent storylines and the believability of its portrayal of the human and financial struggle of survival on the moon coupled with the excellent acting of its main cast put this series a country mile ahead of its rivals. In some ways Moonbase 3 has not been surpassed to this day!. If you are a sci-fi fan of Arthur C. Clarkes - a fall of moondust - i can guarantee your enjoyment of this BBC offering. If Star Trek is more to your taste why not take a chance. You might well get a pleasant surprise. Enjoy your viewing. wendletown50Read full review
