About this product

Product Information

Terry Gilliam, the director of such fantasies as TIME BANDITS, BRAZIL, and THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN, tells a very different kind of story in TIDELAND. Based on the novel by Mitch Cullin and cowritten by Gilliam and Tony Grisoni, TIDELAND follows young Jeliza-Rose (Jodelle Ferland), the daughter of Noah (Jeff Bridges), an aging, drug-addicted rock-and-roller, and Queen Gunhilda (Jennifer Tilly), a mean-spirited, drug-addicted chocoholic. After her mother overdoses, Jeliza-Rose and Noah move to his mother's home in the middle of nowhere, an abandoned wreck of a house. As Noah gets lost in one of his "vacations"--his drug trips, for which his daughter prepares the speedball--Jeliza-Rose becomes friends with an emotionally and physically challenged epileptic named Dickens (Brendan Fletcher), the brother of Dell (Janet McTeer), a terrifying witchlike woman who is deathly afraid of bees and has a penchant for taxidermy. Jeliza-Rose also falls farther into her own fantastical world, particularly with her doll heads Mustique, Sateen Lips, Glitter Gal, and Baby Blonde--one of which falls down a dark and narrow rabbit hole--and a mysterious talking squirrel that is trying to tell her something important. Part PSYCHO, part ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND, Gilliam's challenging film also includes an eclectic soundtrack featuring original songs such as "Wash Me in the Blood of Jesus" and "Van Gogh in Hollywood" (the latter performed by Bridges as the leader of a heavy metal band), as well as an eerie set that echoes Andrew Wyeth's famous painting "Christina's World."

Excellent Seller. Item brand new and sealed as listed. Although the front of the jewel case arrived with a huge crack, the CD and artwork are in immaculate condition. The CD plays fine. I am quite pleased with this purchase. Thank you.

Dark, but starkly original. Satisfying ending.

Terry Gilliam's masterpiece, hands down .The most original and thought provoking film. Though a lot of people overreacted and got the film shut down from the theaters upon initial release, I doubt people will recognize it for what it is until after Gilliam's death, which is a shame. The deleted scenes added more to the overall story, and shouldn't have been cut out, but keeping the length to two hours with no overtime just moderately affected the final film, but I'm glad I was able to see them. I HAD to get this DVD. This is in my replay collection.

  • Jeliza-Rose in Wonderland...

Tho I’m a big fan of Terry Gilliam, Tideland is a bit beyond me. Not a bad film by any means and certainly Jodelle Ferland (Jeliza-Rose) as a bright future ahead of her. It’s just not what I’m looking for in a film. Still, for those who do like movies that explore the inner workings of the mind, this might be an interesting film to watch. The imagery is quite compelling and the underwater scene is a must see. For me, the ending is a bit of a let down. I was left feeling there was so much more to left to explore. Certainly the disturbed young girl (and disturbed she should be with what she’s had to go through) still has a long way to go either in her recovery or in her downward spiraling towards madness. However as Terry Gilliam says in the Intro... Children tend to bounce ...

  • Squandered Potenial

Umm I just bought it (Being unable to find it in the local stores) and it arrived today, I watched it and well it was a very odd movie... Not really bad to say but just different. I originally wanted to watch it because a friend recommened it and also because Jodelle Ferland is amazing but I dunno it's one of those movies that are just really hard to get into. I did though (Get into it that is) but it wasn't until like the last fifteen minutes of the movie up until then I just found myself saying "what the hell?" alot. The acting was really amazing in it Jodelle Ferland and Jeff Bridges give admirable preformancces as always and the supporting actors do their parts well enough as well, sadly the movie suffers from an underdeveloped plot and a difficult to keep up with ...

  • Outlandishly innocent with a tinge of reality.

Young Jelyza Rose is a wonderfully talented girl mislead by her faulty childhood. Following her footsteps through her parent's tainted conceptions, this story reveals the life and times of a lonely, yet wholly fulfilled, alien child able to amuse herself in bizarre ways. Featuring a unique and talented cast, "Tideland" made for a wondrous and magical bedtime story. No more than a simple modern fairy tale for people who choose not to grow up, this story is as beautiful as it is disturbingly wonderful.

I've always loved this movie. Needed to buy it again after my other copy burned in a fire.
