About this product

Product Information

'An irresistible novel ... Perry's Victoriana is the most fresh-feeling I can remember ... Her prose is often beautiful ... the tone is a masterstroke ... You feel the influences of Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens and Hilary Mantel channelled by Perry in some sort of Victorian seance. This is the best new novel I've read in years. It's the kind of novel that makes you alive to the strangeness of the world and of our history.' - Telegraph, 5 stars Set in Victorian London and an Essex village in the 1890's, and enlivened by the debates on scientific and medical discovery which defined the era, The Essex Serpent has at its heart the story of two extraordinary people who fall for each other, but not in the usual way. They are Cora Seaborne and Will Ransome. Cora is a well-to-do London widow who moves to the Essex parish of Aldwinter, and Will is the local vicar. They meet as their village is engulfed by rumours that the mythical Essex Serpent, once said to roam the marshes claiming human lives, has returned. Cora, a keen amateur naturalist is enthralled, convinced the beast may be a real undiscovered species. But Will sees his parishioners' agitation as a moral panic, a deviation from true faith. Although they can agree on absolutely nothing, as the seasons turn around them in this quiet corner of England, they find themselves inexorably drawn together and torn apart. Told with exquisite grace and intelligence, this novel is most of all a celebration of love, and the many different guises it can take.

  • I read it to find out about the earth quake ,but not enough of that.

I usually read classics so this is very different. There seem to be too many characters ,but perhaps because of me not the book . I was hoping for more of the earth quake. I am sure the author has done a lot of historic studies to write this.

  • Rather a wordy and disjointed tale.

English usage is good but the story is rather disjointed. Characters & time sequences come and go quickly. There is no real serpent and the imagination which triggers people's fears are as expected wjhen dealing with the unexplained. Very modern conversations between characters, considering the period this book is supposed to represent. Relationships are strained and more like theatrical performances. Not a book I enjoyed nor was 'compelled'; had I not recommended ii to a reading group I doubt if I'd have finished it.. The reason I ticked 'yes' to recommend it, would be for others to see what they think, for themselves, of the 'airy fairy' contents.

  • A different vision

A much reviewed and much praised novel. Offers a different vision of the world and a rethink of our normal way of viewing late Victorian society. Perhaps not the best novel I will read this year although it might prove to be but a very well written one which engages to the last page.
