Synopsis
In 1876 and 1877, Captain W. P. Clark commanded a detachment of Indian scouts-including Pawnees, Shoshones, Arapahoes, Cheyennes, Crows, and Sioux-who conversed in sign language. They made requests, relayed information, and told stories with their hands, communicating in a language indispensable for quick understanding between Indians of different tribes. The scouts patiently taught Clark the sign system, which he patiently recorded in this book.Originally written in 1884 for use by the United States Army, The Indian Sign Language is far more than a grammar book or curiosity. Clark worked closely with the Indians who taught him the language, and his respect for them and their way of thinking informs every page. Written for future officers in Indian regions, The Indian Sign Language corrects the sentimental and brutal stereotypes of Indians that led to much misunderstanding.Clark believed that sign language could assist him "to think like the Indians," which he considered essential for a conscientious officer. His book discusses reliably and soberly the facts of plains Indian life as he encountered them in the 1870s and 1880s. Now a classic, The Indian Sign Language is a monument to the desire for understanding between radically different peoples., In 1876 and 1877, Captain W. P. I was impressed with the quality of the item, the interaction between the Seller and I, and also the attention to detail in the description and packaging. The Seller even combined shipping for me and did this readily. I would definitely deal with this reputable Seller.

I have shipped MANY books sold by the Sacramento Book Den's store on eBay. We carefully pack books to ensure they arrive in the same condition as when purchased. The plastic wrap used by this seller provided minimal protection to the book's edges, spine and cover. Also, the wrap was difficult to remove without damaging the book. But to be clear we are happy with our purchase and would use this seller again. Cheers.

Will never use this seller again, I received 4 different scratched movies that I can’t watch, contacted seller to make this right and never received a response. Very disappointed.

  • Love/Hate relationship!

I ordered this upon recommendation from a member of the American Mountain Men (AMM). I have the Tomkins book that I have been learning from. This book is much more intense, yo say the least. Not one drawn design in it as a description guide, HOWEVER, saying that, it is extremely descriptive with the written word and it guides the student on how to form sentences using sign. It would be an excellent book if one had a partner to practice with as it would be easier to visualize the sentence structures. Personally, I go back and forth on my opinion of this book. It can be a true love/hate relationship! I just wish I was younger as my mind might absorb the information presented better.
