The first in a planned trilogy of games based on TSR's popular AD&D franchise, Birthright challenges you to unite the divided kingdoms of Anuire. It won't be an easy task, because an enemy called the Gorgon is systematically killing the kings of the land and consuming their bloodlines. Playing the role of a young king, you must rule over your kingdom, participate in negotiations, form alliances, lead your army to battle, and command expeditions to find spells, weapons, and treasures to claim your birthright. <br><br>Conquered provinces are each worth a specific point value. You can also earn points by forming alliances or by finding certain relics while adventuring. To win, you must earn 300, 400, or 500 points, depending on the level of difficulty. While Birthright combines simulation, strategy, role-playing and adventure aspects, players can toggle certain features on or off to create a game that best suits their style. This game is really fun, challenging and worth it.
Birthright The Gorgon's Alliance is a turn based strategy game with some role-playing game elements. Created by TSR and Sierra Online back in the nineties, it was based off a Dungeons and Dragons setting of the same name. Players take control of some already established kingdoms in the region of Anuire and proceed to try and take over the world all the while keeping track of their nations economy, morale, their regent, and bloodline strength. The game has a tacked on adventure mode in which you take control of the regent and his lieutenants directly and go forth to right wrongs and earn experience to level up your regent and find money for your treasury, the problem with that is it's based of the game Doom and his very difficult to play. It's a shame that part of the game isn't better, it keeps the game from getting a perfect score because there is no reason it should be this bad as TSR had made other role-playing games of similar design before this, fortunately you can go the entire game without playing this part of it. Since this part of the game is all in first person and your party member's follow behind you and don't take up formations in combat I lost count of how many times my wizard slammed my warrior in the back of the head with a fireball ending the game.Back to the positives there is a lot of depth to this game as you have several holding in each province you control none of which can surpass a civilization level. Each holding has special uses for each class of regent you play such as Temples which are good for priests, Guilds which are good for thieves, Law which keeps your province under control and are good for warriors, and sources which are good for wizards and allow access to realm spells. Sources represent an areas inherit magic and decrease as civilization increases in your province therefore under the name of each one you will normally see two numbers like this: 6/0 this means my civilization level is 6 and can have holdings in my province up to that level but it has no magic abilities, luckily though you can forge ley lines which move magic from one area to another. Regency points as well as bloodline in general are based on the idea that nobles had something in their blood that gave them the right to rule, in this case it's real and gives them access to powers and abilities while being essential to running your kingdom. They allow you to improve your holdings start new ones and contest your enemies while challenging them for control of their territories or outright destroy them. In fact in order to claim a territory you need to destroy your enemies law holding then perform an act called investiture both of which they have a chance to stop by spending gold and regency points. Their is random percentile die roll(1-100 probability) for a lot of the actions you take so their is almost always a chance for failure and that can be frustrating since you can fail on a 95% chance. The namesake of the game mentions a creature called the gorgon who is rallying an army of goblins and the undead intending to conquer the world by killing everyone else including you. I bought this game because I loved the setting and strategy games especially when they have bits of rpg elements and depth and this has it all. Though it does have a bit of a learning curve it's a lot of fun and has tons of replay value as their are so many different kingdoms to play and they each have their own ways of winning and different situations.

You assume the role of regent of one of the realms of Anuire. The object is to earn enough regency points to accede to the Iron Throne before any of your opponents. The final opponent, the Gorgon spoken of in the title, assembles an evil horde by the end of the game making this task quite difficult. You earn regency points by forming relations with or subjugating your neighbors. Once you earn a predetermined amount of points, you are given the power to unite the land of Anuire under your flag, restoring the glory at the end of an eon of ... Regency points add to the strength of your realm, as do cash, standing army, holdings in other realms, and magic resources. Each turn is divided into three actions, and each action takes one game-month to accomplish - collecting taxes from your subjects, casting ultra-powerful realm spells on your rivals, hiring lieutenants (NPCs) to muster your troops, and conducting diplomacy. Should your regent become restless, you can enhance abilities and realm strength by questing for artifacts in adventure mode. During adventure mode, you and your lieutenants gallivant through statically mapped dungeons, usually slaughtering everything in sight. Adventure mode is true to the D&D system, where each regent's class governs his modes of action. Once alliances and hatreds have been established in each game, there will be a lot of inter-realm skirmishes. You can opt to let the computer run your armies. Or you can march onto the field of glory, risking your regent's, lieutenants' and army's lives. Battles are fought in turns on terrain represented by a 3 x 5 grid. Sometimes the battles are slightly reminiscent of the classic Archon, since you can win a battle by attrition or occupation of a certain area on the board. There are also multiple moves per turn, and racial and terrain bonuses - imagine elves in wooded terrain. The game has several skill levels, and each skill level presents you with more control over your realm. At times, Birthright looks like Cacadius Maximus during his tour of the Roman Sewer. Doom-era brown and gray texture maps with looming two-dimensional cartoonish villains litter adventure mode. Paired with the sound, the unappealing visuals of the game may prohibit first-timers from giving it a chance. Fake-sounding warnings like, "Hey you, you're not supposed to be here," are about as intimidating as a rent-a-cop chowing down at the mall snack hut. And the game has the annoying habit of placing henchmen in the way of treasure and opponents.But these aesthetic drawbacks don't have much of an impact on Birthright's strong point: the playability. There are many ways to arrive at an endgame and there are many different endgames, a tribute to the gaming system's statistical complexity. The mixture of first- and third-person activities and the similarity to classic Dungeons and Dragons are to be appreciated. Birthright: The Gorgon's alliance is an excellent buy for RPG fans, especially for the socially and geographically estranged who must play solo.
