About this product

Product Information

Noel Bennett met traditional Navajo weaver Tiana Bighorse in 1968. In time Tiana took her into her family as a daughter. Together they sheared sheep, collected plants, dyed wool, carded, spun, and wove. This book records their many experiences together, a collaboration that spans nearly thirty years. In 1971, Tiana and Noel wrote Working with the Wool: How to Weave a Navajo Rug . Noel later wrote Designing with the Wool and The Weaver's Pathway . Now, this single, authoritative volume brings together those three books--with updates and revisions--as well as excerpts from other published articles and books by Noel and Tiana about Navajo weaving, culture, and history. Detailed charts and illustrations help the weaver find her way step-by-step through the making of a first sampler and through several more advanced techniques.

  • Navajo Weaving-It's THE BEST, what can I say?

This book is loaded with the spirit and meanings of navajo weaving. My husband was able to make me a huge navajo weaving loom because of the superb pictures and plans inside this book for one. As these looms range in price from $200 through $1000's of dollars, being able to have him make one for me for less than $25 was a dream come true! Now I just have to get my backside in the spinning chair and make the fiber to weave on the loom! This book is beautifully written, and I read it cover to cover which says a lot for a "text-book" style book. It is an easy read and is so interesting that as you work on a project you keep it by you as a reference tool. I am going to be starting my first Navajo style (tapestry) rug in the very near future, and because of this ...

  • excellent title, like The Path From Fleece to Rug, too

This is a fascinating book for anyone who is interested in Navajo rugs and how they are made. It has excellent commentaries on the entire process from cutting the wool, to dyeing the woven yarn, to the basics of setting up the loom and weaving. The book has excellent photos taken by John Running. The Navajo weaver, Tiana Bighorse, is photographed showing the process of creating a Navajo rug. She also has bits of wisdom at the tops of many pages concerning the weaving process. As a collector of Navajo rugs, this book is a valuable resource.

  • An excellent guide to beginning to weave the Navajo way.

This is an excellent book to use to learn about Navajo weaving. It gives clear directions and illustrations accompany most directions for those of us who are visual. I also just enjoyed reading it.
