Very prone to developing faults
I owned two of these years ago, and being the last portable Sony Hi-MD recorder, this was the best one in terms of features. It is a very good recorder, though you needed the Sony software to transfer recordings to and from a PC. This itself made using this machine a little cumbersome. The main problems were mechanical. For such a small device, it was obviously no small feat of engineering to get this to perform, but the mechanical parts were very easy to damage and the unit quickly developed faults under moderate usage. Many used units on sale today have probably not been used much, since this came out at a time when Mini Disc was already more or less obsolete, and solid state recorders were already being employed by people who needed on the fly recording capabilities. Anyone intending to use this device for any length of time needs to be aware that this device would not withstand a lot of wear and tear, and I am speaking from experience. It doesn't have that reassuring ruggedness that a field recorder needs Parts are hard to find, units are expensive to repair (if you can find someone who is willing to do it). It is a glorious little device but very delicate, but with all those moving mechanical parts, cased in such a small and thin shell, it needs to be handled with care, and used sparingly. Personally, I think the kind of money people charge for these do not justify the cost because newer recorders have overtaken this unit in almost every way and they don't rely on the Sony Sonic Stage software, which I am not even sure is easily found on the internet these days. I wouldn't even buy it as a collector's piece because after a while it would just seem like a redundant piece of equipment and I think anyone interested in recording would be better off investing the money in something more resilient, useful and modern. Even though the recording and playback on this is impressive, for any serious use, getting recordings off this is inconvenient, especially when compared with recorders that have simple drag and drop facilities available.

One month ago I purchased a new MZ-M200 on ebay from the USA (It's the same as the MZ-RH1, but with a microphone). I was completely blown away. The product is in a word, fantastic. MiniDisc may have been marked as a dying format, but comparing the look, craftmanship, and technology to other portable music players (*cough iPhone*) really shows that with this recorder/player, Sony got this right. I have always known people going on about the advantages of ATRAC over MP3/AAC but this really has proven to me that there is no comparison. After using SonicStage to rip a CD into ATRAC 356k files and then played back on the MZ-M200........... Breathtaking. It is just simply amazing, there is no other word. Money well spent, on a classic, stylish and top of the range music player. The problem is ...
