When I first saw the film several years ago, it had lasting impression on me. It asks the big question of who we are and why are we here. The opening sequence showing the breadth of the universe gets you from the start and sets the tone for the rest of the film. The film looks great and doesn't rely on cheesy over the top CGI to convey our main characters supernatural experience. Instead it makes it's point with stunning short scene where our central character meets her dead father in another realm whilst taking part in a government funded scientific experiment. As the experiment is deemed a failure by the government they set up a public inquiry to ask why it 'didn't work'. The rest of the film is played out in a courtroom style debate on science versus spirituality. Ellie's (Foster) frustration at trying to convey her personal experience is fascinating to watch and you do genuinely feel for her. To me personally, it make the point that others must be willing to accept that our most valuable experiences do not always require 'tangible evidence' to make them real. Instead people must be willing to make a leap of faith share in the experiences of others. The only light criticism of the film is Matthew McConaughey's irritating character. He's a fringe character who isn't really necessary and doesn't really do much. It appears he's there to be a voice for the spiritual aspect on the experiment and as love interest to Ellie. The spiritual voice from McConaughey could have been done by making Ellie a more spiritually minded character herself. This would have added even more weight to her convictions when the inquiry takes place. Still a great film that is holding up well and proves that 'over the top CGI' are not necessary if you have great story to tell.Read full review
I love this film, because years ago, I used to have very similar visions, when Jodie Foster meets her 'father' on the beach. In my case, I met my deceased mother, and she gave me a hug, which was full of unconditional love, literally a feeling outside of this world, which I will never forget, and a feeling I have never had in this world. Sometimes, I was walking on similar magical beaches, or flying over such beaches, full of beautiful fish. I tried to 'capture' something similar in my animation CREATION on YT: ZAFOSOPHY.

I espacially like the small hidden links in the movie. The way Ellie past and present is connected is very beautifully done. Also the score is amazing. Good work Silvestri... The only bad thing to say is the scene were Ellie steps into the pod. The two guys walking behind here are not the same heigt. Too bad because everything in that scene is shot symetric. All in all, a great movie about life and dedication....
Great Film, Wonderful Cast, So well acted with good Effects and a great Story from one of the greatest Astronomers, Cosmologist Carl Sagan. A Wonderful Story so well told, Fantastic.
