Combining romance, gothic horror, science fiction, and bloody action into a dazzling Anime production, VAMPIRE HUNTER D (2000) takes the vampire mythos to a new level. This movie is not a remake or a continuation of the 1985 movie of the same title. That movie was loosely based on the first of Kikuchi Hideyuki's VAMPIRE HUNTER D books, set 10,000 years in the future. VAMPIRE HUNTER D (2000) takes its cue from the third book in the series, though there are significant deviations in plot. Here, the charismatic vampire, Meier Link, arrives in town in the middle of the night and spirits away a beautiful woman. D, the child of a human and a vampire, is hired to retrieve her. Racing against time and against another group of bounty hunters who were also contracted to perform the rescue, D fights a bizarre cast of Meier's henchmen, each of whom has his own unique and horrific way of killing. Both of the VAMPIRE HUNTER D films benefit from the participation of fantasy artist Yoshitaka Amano, whose character designs for both films drip with the eroticism and decadence of a Gustav Klimt painting. Director Yoshiaki Kawajiri adds his talent at dreaming up gruesome enemies, which was also evidenced in his previous work, NINJA SCROLL.

    Vampire Hunter D

    I have been after this particular DVD version of this Anime classic because of the excellent audio commentary by Jonathan Clements who is very informative. The film it’s self is very entertaining, and is well paced. If you are a fan of horror/supernatural Anime this film has plenty to offer.

    Dark Masterpiece

    Originally from 1985, Vampire Hunter D was one of the very first pieces of manga animation that i had ever watched many years ago, the other from 'fist of the north star', and on the strength of this film i have been an avid follower of japanimation since. So, when I had the chance to buy it on eBay I was very pleased to win it in auction. The anime is set in a desolate future the story follows the exploits of 'D' a vampire hunter like no other, hired to protect a village girl Doris Lang (i know stupid name) from the evil intentions of Count Magnus Lee and a hoard of well concieved undead minions! The animation by todays standards looks dated, however the characters, settings, and concept more than make up for this in every aspect as well as some great one liners! By all means this is a ...

    The long-awaited re-release of the original animated horror classic is finally here on DVD! In the year 12,090 A.D., the Earth has fallen into the clutches of ruthless Vampires. Humans are enslaved by a corrupted feudal system, prey to the whims of Vampiric aristocrats. Only one being has dared to challenge the cruel authority of these arrogant immortals -- the mysterious Vampire Hunter called "D". Cult classic by any standard, the sophisticated blend of horror and futuristic science fiction distinguishes Vampire Hunter D as a strikingly original gothic thriller. The darkly fantastic imagery and exotic characters help to fully realize the potency of the film, confirming its status as an exceptional accomplishment in animation.

    Classic.

    A very good piece of Japanese manga/anime. If you are a fan of these things - you probably have heard about Vampire Hunter. The story is great and interesting. Worth seeing, the film itself is a classic one. Maybe not the best of its kind, but definately one of the best - in my opinion. Would please especially those who admire more traditional anime style - little computer work etc., more conservative style of animation. Not recommended for those who do not like Japanese animation :)
